I volunteer at a regional gallery and get to meet some wonderful, weird and wacky people.
But the ones that get up my goat are the ones who say "That looks like something a 5 year old would do." and expect me to agree with them.
And whilst we have a lot of community exhibitions that are amateurish enough (so perhaps the comment may be fair enough), the comment is usually reserved for iconic artists in major travelling exhibitions who are extremely well known.
Does anyone here like abstract art? And if you really hate it, why?

I have to wonder if he portrayed the torture and suffering of the victims of his stock in trade?
By the way anyone can read whatever the want into any daub, I will refrain from describing what emotion that picture instills in me.

I do agree that it is a good photograph though 🙂

I love your daughters drawings, Poddy. Your photos are very artistic. When you post certain photos using the enhanced programs, I often don't care for the "improvement". I like some of your raw photos better. That is just my personal taste though.

I don't know what abstract art is. don't know what whilst means. I used to be really into decreped art, had quite a nice collections from things I made from old Halloween decorations.
To each their own, If your weird and wacky peoples don't like it, then why are they there looking at it? I have an uncle with severe austism, he does these scribblings I don't think are all that great, however, I am proud of the fact his "art" sells for big money, least wise alot of money to someone like me.

TCM, my daughter has drawn at least 2 hours per day, every day of her life since she was 7.
Her web page has had over half a million views since she joined that site, she has submitted over 1,200 drawings 🙂
Here is another one of hers

Poddy, your daughter is the definition of a true artist. She has to draw... it is in her.
How wonderful that she has found a place to share her ART, and others have a place to enjoy her talent.
Can you send my a pm, and give me a link to her page?

Oh my god yes lol! I thought I'd come back from lunch to a few comments and I got this...
No offense all but please stay away from me on a Saturday morning lol. Or at least keep your opinions to yourselves. Because saying out loud "this could be done by a 5 year old" whilst standing in front of a Fred Williams or Brett Whitely makes you look like a fool.
Sorry to be so blunt but there it is.
... You asked for opinions, then finish off by telling us that we are fools!
Just because YOU might like the works of Fred Williams or Brett Whitely doesn't mean we all do, and sorry to be blunt here... but I think their art is ridiculous, esp Brett Whitely.
Just because some like this art and some like that art , doesnt make them FOOLS! - or Uneducated! - and to suggest that some people should just stay away from art galleries *if they dont get it* shows narrow-mindedness IMO. I like going to art galleries. That does not imply that I have to like the ART that is in there at that time!
And, each person to their own opinion, doesnt make them right or wrong.
You asked a question, but it seems you ONLY want people to agree with YOUR VIEWS on the subject!

Thank you janeababe !
Whilst I don't necessarily agree with your opinion of all of Williams' or Whitely's work, some I do feel the same about .
I do, however, agree with the balance of your post .
The Op would do well to reassess the role of a volunteer which is to enhance the visitor experience (even in a regional gallery) .
They are not there to critique/criticise/dismiss the opinions of visitors let alone deride the opinions of other posters as they have done here !
That is arrogance imo .

Agree with the above. The op's need to have others agree with her views are paramount. She takes it all personally.. she didn't create the art in the galleries she is only showing it. People can say what they like about the art good or bad .
. .
Art is a very subjective thing and you like it or you don't. You understand it or you don't. To assume that one needs a special and highly educated eye to 'get it' is sheer elitism.
