DD (in her 20s) went to the dentist for a checkup last week. The dentist said that she needs to get a tooth filled as there is a chance that it could turn black. The tooth that he wants to fill is the cental incisor (front) which has a small mark in the bottom corner, This is a result of her falling when she was 12 months old, a baby tooth was pushed back into her gum. At the time I thought the tooth had fallen out but approx 3 months later the tooth slowly grew back down. When she got her 2nd tooth it appeared with a mark in the bottom corner that has slowly faded in time and doens't worry DD. At this stage DD doesn't have any fillings and this will be her first.
Don't think the dentist is aware of the history of this tooth but I'm worried that filling it unnecessarily will weaken it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would not be rushing in
does not sound urgent. I would seek a second or a third opinion and adopt a watch and wait appraoch at this stage

Thanks ashjoma I was thinking the same regarding a 2nd opinion. Are you safe and not in the area of the bush fires.

The only reason I can think of the tooth turning black would be caused by a damaged nerve. The x-rays would reveal that. I'm not sure why he suggested a tooth filling?? Maybe he meant the root filled? Which what i think is referred to as root canal treatment.
It is possible that the growth of her second tooth was affected by the trauma.
It doesn't really make sense though, to do a filling without the root canal...
Could she phone him and ask why he thinks the tooth may turn black??
I'm not a dentist, just speaking from experience.....

To give advice on this, anyone replying would need to be a dentist and to have inspected the tooth.

DD is in her 20's without a filling. The discoloured mark on DD tooth is not decay but a mark from when her tooth was knocked 20 years ago.

I still don't see why you would expect a non dentist to give advice. Even a dentist wouldn't give advice unless they inspected the tooth themselves.
