Just because none of us has an expensive rug on the floor, does not mean that other, well off people would buy cheap stuff just to appease the envious.

You missed a vital piece of information there.. the rug Abbott purchased was paid for out of taxpayers funds.

I am sure no-one would care less what luxury goods he might purchase out of his own salary/income.

Of course it's out of taxpayers funds. Kirribilli House ,as is the Lodge, maintained by the Government for the use of PM and his family while they are staying in Sydney, and to entertain visiting dignitaries. You surely didn't think they were going to duck down to Spotlight to pick up a cheap rug, did you?

The rug and all other fittings and renovations will still be there after Mr Abbott has left the building, I'm sure.

To bring it back to a domestic level, as some on here like to do, do you think it wise, when times are tough and you have to sell off the car because you can't afford it (apparently) and your job (income) has been reduced and you can barely pay the mortgage (again apparently) to dash out and buy fancy furniture and fittings just because you have visitors coming?

I suppose the reporter could have been so awe struck by Gillard that she thought the lino was thick carpet... I doubt it though.

See?  This is why we cannot risk that with Mr Abbott.

Any chance of a translation of that comment, please?

Read your comment again, and think why, with the current PM,    there needs to be a real, beautiful, thick carpet.

No?

Never mind........

The most vulnerable have to tighten their belts due to the dire financial straits Australia is allegedly in, yet, the PM thinks its acceptable to spend the taxpayers money on something as frivolous as a rug. I have nothing against money being spent on repairs and maintainance.

FGS, it's a rug!

a $13,000 rug is not as frivillous as a $3 million school hall that nobody can use. Or 26 laptop computers that can't be used.

If the rug is all everyone has to worry about then we're doing good.

Plus I'm pretty sure that in a house where presumedly visiting dignatories may visit etc, and photos be sent round the media for publicity, the $50 Kmart mug ain't gonna look so good.

The dinner set and cutlery in the place is probably worth as much as that per piece.

Oh, and the furniture in there? Now and in the past? probably not from Ikea...

just sayin.
