Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have become adicted to Ancestry.com and am lucky enough that one side of my family can be researched way back into the dim times.

The other side has hit a brick wall and I have to wait until someone else in the world may have more information.

How is everyone else going?

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

Flashie, of course he won that cup, and the medal he's got on the left hand side of his jacket.

Can't place the uniform but you might ask the Australian War Museum if it has any conection with cadets of one of the forces... you know, junior members?

The cap looks like those worn by bell boys, but the uniform doesn't

Someone has done a wonderful job of pressing the creases in his trousers ๐Ÿ™‚

Darkie I have just got my grandfathers freemason apron etc from my uncles as well. Very bright colours. I was going to comment on the creases on flashies dads trousers. My Dad was in the Navy and they had to put seven creases down the length of the leg for the seven seas. Dont know if it still happens. Mon may know. Flashie I notice your Dad has a little pouch on the belt, I wonder what that was for? Would be most interesting to find out. I think we all come from some pretty impressive people who have left their mark in various ways, its fabulous to see that they are still thought of now and again after all these years.

I had meant to also comment how so many of the old pictures have the barley twist table or chair in them.  They must have been the standard photographer prop in the old days as I have them right through from 1880's to 1940's. Loving seeing the pictures and hearing the stories.

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

Darkie, he looks like a telegram boy to me with the little pouch?  OH also suggested possibly boys brigade?

Matega, when I got married in '74, I still had to press the seven folds into OH pants. The uniform is now changed to standard dress pants instead of the bell-bottoms so that ironing system no longer applies.  It was SUCH a pain too and if you got a 'double' seam then they had to be dampened down and redone.  Also the tops had to be ironed in a special way and the business-style shirts.  A right pain for a Navy wife! :^O

Mon I hate ironing and what a pain it must have been for you. Thank goodness they have now gone for a easier pair of trouser.

Maybe the navy wives rose up in rebellion?

I would have :^O

I remember seeing those trousers with the seven horizontal creases and being amazed at who had thought that up.

Okay the 'seven seas' but  ... ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

Sadly Dad has been gone 30 years now and I found this photo in his things......it was taken when he was still living in Scotland.....and there is no one left to ask.....................but I am taking a guess at some sort of Naval Cadets......as I know Dad served in the Merchant Navy and came out to Australia under some sort of exchange program after WW2.
