I think Matilda might be onto something there.

Punch, do you know where this photo was taken, was it a wedding, funeral etc? Something I just read that was interesting is that anyone with a Salvo uniform in those times would have had to hand over about 3 weeks worth of wages for the uniform!

Clair I have been researching on and off for about 20 yrs, hubbys and my trees.
I have had a big stumbling block with one main branch and unfortunately the lovely ladies here couldn't help me with that one but helped me heaps with some others. From their help I have been able to venture further afield and I am over the moon with what I have found .
Haven't found any convicts or royalty, lol. Lots of ag labs = agricultural labourers.
I was able to solve a family mystery of how someone died in hubbys family, he was killed/murdered, this was never talked about, very hush hush.
Like the others said, don't take as gospel what others have in their trees, make sure you check out the details. I have found a lot of info there but have also found lots of incorrect stuff.
I decided to pay a yearly subscription to ancestry after the free 14 day trial, it averages out at around $17 per month.
Good luck, it is fun and addictive.
Oh and "Trove" makes for good reading, especially the death notices, you can find out lots there.

Golly I've just tonight signed up for a 14 day free trial and I've found others that are searching for my family, all my dads aunties & uncles are listed

lol, it does surprise you when you find others that are already researching you family doesnt it?
Matilda, I hadnt considered that he may have been salvation army too. I found some info on Trove re the one in the SA uniform, but nothing popped up about another one. I'll have to check again.
Not sure where the photo was taken, it was emailed to me by someone researching the family and I think she got it from someone else. Not too long after it was taken, a few of them moved to New Zealand. I thought it may have been a family shot taken before they left.

My family is a little boring, I do have one ancestor that helped capture Ned Kelly, so I was pretty impressed with that. I also very recently discovered one that built churches, a musuem, a couple of schools and various other buildings in Dunedin. I was able to find some photos of some of them online.
On my husbands side, we discovered my MIL had a couple of half brothers. Quite a shock considering she was the illegitimate child of a catholic priest.
Sorry punch, but you made me laugh with your family being boring:^O That includes me?;-)

Clair I thought the 14 day free trial would be enough for me, little did I know where I was heading, lol. I think the subscription is the best money I have spent recently. When I am looking for people I am sort of transported to what it would have been like back then, it's amazing, though some people think it's boring, I don't.
