Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have become adicted to Ancestry.com and am lucky enough that one side of my family can be researched way back into the dim times.

The other side has hit a brick wall and I have to wait until someone else in the world may have more information.

How is everyone else going?

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

DDU, I found a website dedicated to that a while back, cant remember what it was called though.

Do you know the regiment, the year, the ship? Maybe try the state archives in the relevant state.

Sometimes, if you know the regiment, you can search a timeline of where they were stationed to give an idea of timing.

If you want me to, i can search for a service record on Find My Past UK.

I only know that he was in the army and his daughter was (apparently) born in England, although I have her parents being married in Tasmania (so I have it all wrong I guess)

John Kelly, of H.M 51st King's Own Light Infantry Regiment (51st regiment of foot?)

Also, is there somewhere where you can see street maps from back in the late 1800's ?

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

Roughly what year was john kelly born?

I have occasionaly found street maps just by googling a town and maybe add history to the search terms.

Could he have been in any other regiment? Do you know where he was born?

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I'm getting 1642 John Kellys. I can refine the list by regiment, but they arent all listed by 1st, 51st etc. Some dont have the regiments listed at all, some are listed as Kings Own, I think yours is Yorkshire, but there is several of them too.

I can narrow it down by year and place of birth if you know them.

Way too many Kelly's. Common names are much more difficult to trace.
