Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have become adicted to Ancestry.com and am lucky enough that one side of my family can be researched way back into the dim times.

The other side has hit a brick wall and I have to wait until someone else in the world may have more information.

How is everyone else going?

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I mean I did put Trove in favourites so I could look later, two references came up with her name, definitely her, fairly unusual name and dates worked out like she would have been a teenager?

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

Trove is a site which has most of Australias news papers on it.....up to about 1954 I think.

It is a brilliant site....you can narrow it down to particular papers.....decades.......months.

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

Clair, when you use trove, experiment with different ways of searching. For uncommon names, just searching normally is fine, but for more common names, use quotation marks so that you narrow down the results. Also remember that first names were often shortened, William = Wm, John = Jno, James = Jas etc. I sometimes add the town they lived in to a search as well.

Advanced search is good too, refine by state, date etc. I also find it best to refine by earliest date.

For uncommon names, I dont even search a first name, i just look for every entry with the relevant surname. Often you can find relatives you didnt know about.

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

And search for different spellings too eg Burke/Bourke, McGregor/MacGregor/McGrigor, Davison/Davidson.

And dont try and find anyone with the surname Day, its virtually impossible X-( its even harder than Smith :_|

Is that what it is? I thought they were mispelling John and just last night I realised what Jas was :_|

Punch, the surname that I have is Greenhalch but sometimes also spelt Greenhalgh.

Susanna's parents are John Greenhalch and Susanna Saver and she married a William Fall.
