Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have become adicted to Ancestry.com and am lucky enough that one side of my family can be researched way back into the dim times.

The other side has hit a brick wall and I have to wait until someone else in the world may have more information.

How is everyone else going?

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

What is the best way to find out to search death records in Melbourne in the last 10 or so years?

My Mum used to write to her cousin there for decades and then she stopped getting letters from the cousin. The age of the cousin would be very late 80's to 90's. She may not be deceased though, could be in a home not able to communicate. She had 1 son.

My mother just wonders what happened to her.

Thanks flashie and punch for your replies.

I had a problem recalling the son's surname, as his mother remarried when he was little.

Trove provided me with his birth certifcate (googled sons first name, mothers first name and maiden name).

On googling the son's full name,I found that sadly he died of in May this year - a death notice came up.

He did however have a small business and website and was fairly well known so more info on the web. His children have taken over the website, so I emailed his son.

He sent a lovely reply, and I found out that his grandmother had passed away at home in 2009. I will be able to pass that onto my Mother now.

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I'm glad you were able to find them, a shame they had both already passed though.

We have lost contact with my grandmothers sister and have no idea if she is dead or alive. I havent managed to find any information on her unfortunately

I remember this Auntie I used to visit in Bassendean, I even google mapped the house, matched her up to electoral records, found her husband who had died. Anyhoo ... ๐Ÿ™‚

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I saw  your post Clair................and came to see how many you are up to now.

I never got to meet my grandfather he was long gone before I was born..............but he was into local politics (like his father).............and heaps of their minutes are on Trove....................it was great reading it......it was like getting a little glimpse into the man he was.

Yeah ๐Ÿ™‚

Well still mostly doing my fathers side as they were all in Australia.

Only really up to 2nd great grandparents then I think they came from England/Wales? So got a few records in my shoebox like England census etc but need to check those out more before I add them to my tree. I might ring my uncle in Perth see if I can get some info from him.

Some of my family came from country towns in Victoria, I just wonder what they did there you know? The towns are near me, I might go one day to search libraries, museums, historical societies, cemeteries in those towns.

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have quite a few that were in Ballarat and St Arnaud during the goldrush years. I have looked up a few of their cemetery plots, so i can go and have a look one day.

Re: Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I love cemeteries...................by kids tease me about it..............but there is soooooooooooo much history there.

My favourite one is where my ancestors are buried..............it is on top of a hill............over looking the valley.

And all the people are buried all over the place............not in lovely rows like most cemeteries.

Some of them wanted to be buried facing their properties.

And there is a huge bif family from there that had some sort of falling out..............and none of them wanted to be buried near of facing each other..............so they are all over the place.

I will have a little look in my photobucket...........I think I have a picture.
