Flashie when someone dies and gets buried over here the family or whoever is arranging things gets issued a grant for the grave for 25 yrs. It used to be 100 yrs, then they reduced it to 50 yrs and now it's down to 25 yrs. That grave effectively is the families until expiration, other family members can be buried there.
When they expire to keep them you have to pay a renewal fee around the amount that Clair mentioned.
In our main cemeteries (2 metro ones) in a real lot of cases we can't do that now as they are implementing a renewal program and taking away headstones to make way for more burials in between existing graves. There is and has been a big hoo haa over it.
Luckily at this stage there are no plans for our smaller cemeteries and therefore we can still renew the grant for just another 25 yrs. To be able to replace or put a new headstone on a grave whose grant has expired we have to renew the grant, big dollars and can't be done at the 2 main cemeteries.
