Just one question Setipus.
His army records say he was born Inverness......that is Scotland.
So I just want to confirm he was born in Iralnd or Scotland.

Flashie
That is the problem. according to death certificate and the inscription on his head stone. Cootehill Ireland place of birth.
Army records say Inverness Scotland. His American daughter according to american census said her place of birth Scotland.
Also according to her he married his first wife in Scotland.
I thought that as his father was also served in the army as a captain maybe he was born in ireland but regestered in scotland? maybe..oh if its any help they were Protestant not catholic...

I believe this might the accident that caused his death......
SHOALHAVEN.
WEDNESDAY.
The residence of Mr. Alexander Stewart, at Boolong, was burnt to the ground on Monday night. The fire was caused by the explosion of a kerosene lamp while it was being lighted. Mr. James Stewart and father are very badly burnt, the latter is not expected to recover.
Source Trove.....Sydney Morning Herald.

Septipus......do you have any of his marriage certificates.
By rule of thumb I tend to go with what was written on them as the groom would have provided the information himself.
Whereas a death informant gives what they have been told or guess at.

I think we can confirm he was born in Ireland.
His son said his father was a native to Ireland in the Coroners inquest into his death.
It is too long to post here....I hope this link takes you to the page I am on.

That is great Flashie. Thanks and yes that is him. James was my g/grandfather.
Poor old sausage fought in a war sailed all over the world in a leaky wooden boat and died in such a dreadful manner..He deserved to pass in his sleep..
its kinda like you know them isn't it.

I found the copy of the coroners inquest on Ancestry but it doesn;t tell us any more than we already knew.
Message me with an email address if you would like a copy of it.
I have to go out now.....but I will keep looking later.
Even if we find nothing else we have confirmed that he indeed was born in Ireland.
