Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have become adicted to Ancestry.com and am lucky enough that one side of my family can be researched way back into the dim times.

The other side has hit a brick wall and I have to wait until someone else in the world may have more information.

How is everyone else going?

Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

That's odd Rosie, different parental names... between marriage and death...

Could she have been married in, say, the UK and then come out here later and no one really sure of her parent's names... something like that?

Or did they divorce and her mother remarried and now only she and the new husband are noted?

I've tried 'scotlandspeople' to no avail yet ๐Ÿ˜ž but won't give up.

Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I have just discovered the searchable databases at lots of Victorian cemeteries. I have found relatives at St Kilda, Springvale, Kew, Lilydale and Ballarat.

I have taken a screen shot of the grave locations and uploaded onto the death record of each person. One day i am going to go and take photos of all the headstones ๐Ÿ™‚

Rosie I have an ancestor whose birth isn't registered anywhere in Australia. I got the next siblings birth cert and sure enough he was listed there. I suspect that his registration got lost in the post, as they were living somewhere outside of Bendigo when he was born.

Rosie have you checked your local library to see if they have BDM indexes on CD? My library does.

Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

I went to my local library recently and asked for a listing of all their family history resources. I got 12 pages of info and it includes quite a few interstate documents which I can use. Some are on microfiche which will be a pain to search through. I'm going to go through the pages and highlight the files I need to look at and tackle them bit by bit when I get time to go to the library.

Same old, same old here. Do have a problem with Ancestry that they are working on to try and fix...

IF you find that some ggggrandparents have more than one child and that those children have gone off and married and their families take them in different directions.

When you come to realise that the two different lines finally join up to the same parents, don't try and use the same grandparents 'page' and join it up to the two families.

It doesn't work. What happens is that because it can happen that the grandparents are the 12th gggreat grandparents to one line, they can be the 14th gggreat grandpaents on the other line (due no doubt to how quickly the families had children)

If you do try and join them up you will find the grandparents will quickly become the '2nd uncle of the 3rd cousin of the 10th grandmother' or somesuch.

It is necessary, at the present, to rebuild the grandparent's pages again for each line.

Gawd! That sounds complicated, I've had practice trying to explain this to ancestry and they did eventually understand me.

I am told they are working on it ๐Ÿ™‚

Gil you could run into this problem the way you are going ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyone else into seeking their ancestors?

Hmmm, I finally found the death record for my gg grandfather and it has different names for his parents than his marriage certificate has.

Same name for his father, but different name for his mum. I'm inclined to believe the death record because it has his mothers maiden name, which the marriage one doesnt. Soooo confusing!!

Phew punchy, good on you for succeeding against all odds ๐Ÿ™‚

Yes you are right. I keep firmly in my mind that there's many a slip t'wixt cup and lip but I have decided to keep going for the moment and go back over it all when I know even more.

Yeah gill, yipeee indeed. I have spent a lot of the day trying out different ways of overcoming this problem... I MAY have found a way around it, but I am still holding my breath every time I check out a person's relationship to me ๐Ÿ˜ž
