Are animals victims of domestic violence?

Why is it so hard for humans to see animals as victims of domestic violence?

Thanks Lyndal, but I prefer to stay in denial of these atrocious acts.

I have 'head in the sand syndrome'.   I know I shouldn't, but can't help it.

A neighbour has an ex partner who has been stalking her for several years. She threw him out after he attacked her with a hammer and he is now totally out of control. Some of his party tricks include putting a red belly black snake in each of her work boots left on the veranda overnight, setting a large eucalyptus tree along side her house on fire and throwing an expensive water pump into her dam.

I run sheep on her property. A couple of years ago she found a new born lamb abandoned by its mum. It was frozen, very weak and near death. Frankly I thought she was mad, but she took it in by her fire, warmed it up and hand fed it. It was a miracle but she managed to save it. It grew and grew and grew, until it was a huge wether, weighing well over 100 kg. It followed her around the paddocks when she fed her horses and would regularly sit on her doorstep guarding her from tradesmen etc who called, charging them like a ram if he felt they shouldn't be there. He was a real character.

One morning he fell ill with an unexplained temperature, racing pulse and extreme agitation. His symptoms got progressively worse and a vet was called. The vet stayed for nearly 12 hours, trying to save the beloved pet sheep, but unfortunately it died an agonising death in the early hours of the following morning. Blood tests later showed the sheep had been dosed up with large amounts of amphetamine, deliberately poisoned by the stalking ex.

There are no words to describe some-one who could do that.

The lady needs to get a camera system (they can be quite economical now) and get someone to put it around the house to catch the stalker in the act.  The system could have a time recorder on it so ultimately, he will be caught red handed at those exact times.

How frightening to have a psychopath like that around ..I hope the police have been informed?  It will not end well if he is not stopped.  The longer it goes on, the more likely there will be severe violence from him.

She has a number of cameras, but the guy is very cunning. He only comes onto the property in the early hours of the morning wearing a hoodie, glasses, scarf etc. No way to definately identify him. The police have attended on a number of occasions and she has a restraining order on the guy. In spite of all of this he is still getting away with it, as he is not leaving any proof behind. Unfortunately I gather many woman who are stalked have similar problems.

I can't watch animal abuse, either.  It makes my stomach churn.  I can't imagine what kind of monster would get satisfaction from making little innocents suffer.

As for the stalker... hire a night watchman... arm him with a gun and instructions to aim for the legs of hooded intruders... turn the spilled blood over to the police for DNA testing...
