"Welfare and business groups say any move by Australia Post to charge a fee for mail delivery would disadvantage low-income earners and regional areas."

Of course profit is the bottom line when running a business.
3000 people without internet for 3 weeks very many compared to those with it. Telstra can/should compensate them for that.
as i said other parts of AP more than cover for the letter part, it is a successful business. Not everyone lives through there pc, some parts of Oz the internet is not great - i don't get why anyone would want less services for all of Oz just because they do fine with out letter delivery.

No, I don't think there needs to be extra charges for users at this stage.

Performance
This year Australia Post’s profit after tax was $311.9 million; this is 20.8 per cent higher than our 2010 underlying profit after tax (excluding restructuring costs). This is a pleasing result considering that the decline in addressed letter volumes accelerated faster than we forecast. We expect that this trend will continue as consumers, businesses and government agencies increasingly shift to digital communication channels.
Underpinning the improved result was $5.9 billion in revenue. Taking full ownership of StarTrack this year meant that, for the first time in our 204-year history, we are predominantly a parcels business. This structural adjustment is reflected in our Parcel and Express Services business contributing 45.1 per cent of our total revenue.
We delivered a strong rate of return for our shareholder, the Federal Government, paying a cash dividend of $243.7 million (up 25.7 per cent this year). Our return on equity was 18.5 per cent.

I have embraced 'technology'.....to a point!
I choose to have all my utility bills, phone and rates posted to me I mean, I pay for the service in these charges.
I don't need to spend my whole life at the computer......I keep a hard copy of all these whilst I consult my 'bills and bobs' book each week. I choose to pay my bills, on time and in an organised and disciplined way. When I make payment, yes I do spend this time in front of my *bleeping computer screen, usu. pay by Bpay.
I tried the online bills bit but was too haphazard for me sorry......people send you their bills when they want and I am not computer savvy enough (computers were only first manufactured in 1974, my 'Leaving Year/year 12!).....I have taught myself how to use a computer over many years. My kids roll their eyes at me- and rightly so LOL when I attempt to sound au fait about computers.
When I get bills in mail I open the blighters, peruse them and act on them. If a bill came to me via email I would print it out at great cost-why should I pay paper/ink for someone elses bill?! Not I....not this weird and wonderful lil' black duck.
Anyway, I should not have to defend how I choose to receive my bills and accounts to anyone suffice to say that using my preferred method of bill paying I am not in debt, not behind in payments.
I cannot justify affording a 'smart' phone and I don't want anymore 'technology'....jus yet:)
We have not had mail delivered on Mondays for several years. I am in a Regional city in WA

Are you sure there is no extra charge applied on any of your paper bills ddb? Most companies do have that charge.
How many homes in Australia don't have any internet connection... via computer, tablet or smartphone?
For those that don't paper options are still available. Having their bills and letters delivered 3 days a week is going to affect them how?
so what do you suggest for these people
Home internet access is more common in households with higher incomes. The proportion of households in the highest income quintile with internet access was 95%, compared with 55% for households in the lowest income quintile.

The CEO of Australia Post knows less than CS posters?
Knows less about what?
Who suggested anything of the sort?
I posted an paragraph from the Auspost annual report which clearly states they made a profit and paid a $243M dividend.
