This is horrific for the innocent people who have been targeted by the radical Islamic terror group ISIL.
When Tony Abbott said "they are coming for us" he was vilified by the left, accused of fear mongering and dishonest.
What a lot of left commentators and left wing media will not acknowledge is the PM is in receipt of all security briefings and is warning us, as he should.
This hit list on innocent Australians walking down the street or going about their business has been put on a hit list to be executed by radial Islamic terror adherents.

No I am not a fan of
Donald Trump
Nor am I a fan of Obama
But I am a fan of democracy
Where every one has a right
To freedom of speech
Even white people
Heaven forbid
And I will not be oppressed
Just because political correctness
Dictates it
And I will not stick my head in the
Sand and say she'll be right mate
When clearly it is not

Tell that to the people who were gunned down on the beach overseas. Innocent tourists murdered but feel free to make light of it.

Then I would suggest you have a problem comprehending any opinion that differs from your own.
Far from waxing and waning my opinion has always been absolutely consistant.
a) There always has and always will be threats to public safety in Australia from extremist groups or individuals - currently the greatest of these threats is from Muslim extremists. We need to be aware of this and take steps to protect ourselves.
b) having acknowledged that, the avarage Australian faces a far greater threat to his/her safety from road accidents or random acts of violence than from terrorists, yet we manage to live with these threats without becoming hysterical about them.
c) We should not not demonise any section of society because of the actions of certain individuals within that group. (Remember the outrage when Queensland encted those draconian anti bikie laws and innocent motorbike club members felt they were being tarred with the same brush as the criminal bikie element?
d) Running around like a headless chook shouting "the sky is falling," (go back and reread your #2) helps no-one, adds nothing to the discussion and is no good at all for one's blood pressure.

what possible steps can we take to
protect ourselves when terrorists are not
afraid of being caught. their aim is to
terrorise by committing terror acts in busy,
public places.
we can take measures to protect ourselves
from home invasions. we can't protect
ourselves from today's terrorism.
we have never been faced with this type
of terrorism here before.

I think I will just carry on as normal but be alert, not alarmed like John Howard's govt. told me to be
