Autralian hospitals

I heard on TV the other day that hospitals are gearing up for the pandemic and are not seeing people for selective surgeries etc.  I was in the next room, so I was not sure if I misunderstood, and have not been able to find more about it.  Anybody heard anything?  I suppose to see a surgeon about my knee operation in couple of weeks.

I will try to call them on Monday, but it is not easy to get through in the best of times.

The Chinese didn't lock down Wuhan until Jan 23 and by then they already had 581 cases (know and declared cases, that is). Over 5 million people fled Wuhan just before the lockdown. That's 5 million people who've possibly been in contact with an infected person fleeing the most infected area and taking the disease with them to the rest of China. That's equivalent to a fifth of our population.

The virus is already here and stopping people coming in isn't going to make any difference now. Stopping people travelling from one infected country to another infected country is going to do what exactly? Australia is urging Australians to travel home if they're overseas at the moment. Most other countries are doing the same thing. Are you saying people shouldn't be allowed to return home?

I am not sure where you got the figure of 5million people leaving Wuhan before the lock down.  Where would they go?  However, at that stage with only few hundred officially infected it would be perfectly possible that in the city of 11 million the 5 million were not infected.  Whole China only ended up with 90 thousand infected because of the lock down.  And now all the new cases in China are imported.  That is why China now has 2 weeks quarantine for anybody arriving there.

Stopping people coming in will make a big difference because each infected person can spread it further, and we have to avoid having large number of cases.  Citizens returning to Australia should be sent to Darwin to the place the second lot of people returning went.  It would  not kill them and could save us lot of problems in the future.  There are already reports of people who supposed to be self isolating are not doing so.

If we do not keep the number of infected people down to manageable levels we are looking forward to future where we will not have enough supplies to take care of people.  Read about people being intubated without sedation due to shortage of drugs, and that is just the lucky ones who get the repirator.  And the story that only old people get seriouly ill is a myth too.

The operative word is " reported" - those with life threatening pre-existing conditions where never written up as dying from caronavirus , those that did not get admitted to hospital never died from caronavirus. Is a matter of different accounting .

However is no point in speculating a conversion of statistics to western definitions - I think the emerging horror of the Italian experience is graphic enougth to accurately determine the potential threat.

In any case it is ridiculous to say that the Chinese did not do enough.  They did not know what they were dealing with; I remember people  saying what an over reaction closing down whole province was.  The truth is we, as in "the rest of the world",  had almost 3 months to prepare and we are in trouble

They got caught out because mass death pandenics or even seasonal pathogens are almost routine there , ( still indirectly suffering swine flu as a distraction) .  Nothern hemisphere West  got caught out beacuse of it's love of  cosy commercially dependent lifetyle underwritten by vested interests that does not tolerate changes until a critical mass is realised

We have been fortunate - summer/autumn time , low air pollution , not as gregarious lifestyle, diverse gene pool , lots of sunshine, low density living , advanced warmings, effective freedom of speech and plenty of soap boxes   , Pollies accessable.
