I don't think his qualities as a man and as a friend have ever been in dispute but that does not necessarily qualify him to a be the political leader of a country.....he was a lousy Prime Minister.
Even the staunchest of Liberal supporters were embarrassed and disappointed in his performance

Probably the same as Keating's constituents thought when he lost to John Howard in 1996 and did not return to the House

no, sorry I can't justify abbott's absence with keating retiring from parliament 20 years ago- did he also resign via fax do you know??
i am also mindful of the last 3 PM's doing the right thing
After being defeated by John Howard at the 1996 election, Keating resigned as Prime Minister and retired from Parliament.
here's a little article on tony's plans for you to read
Dumped PM Tony Abbott says he intends to stay in Parliament
THERE is growing speculation that his career in politics is over — but Tony Abbott has told news.com.au he intends to remain in Parliament.
Whispers in Canberra’s corridors tell of a “sulky” Mr Abbott, still coming to terms with being dumped.
He has not shown his face in Parliament since being ousted as Liberal leader on Monday night — but this afternoon he indicated he wanted to stay in politics.

You have to love research/records (well some do not !)
I found this post of mine from 25-11-2013 08:09 PM :
I would earnestly "hope" that Abbott would imitate the circus duo of Rudd & Gillard (sans knife act), fade away into oblivion, and be replaced by Turnbull.
Gosh.

And what's more he couldn't even knit !
Oh gosh, I am now in the poo (again), because that will be construed as me nitpicking.
How could she have even contemplated doing this. It's embarrassing in the extreme. It finished her.

It seems you have completely forgotten that after Gillard was knifed she never went to work again all the while collecting her wages.

Oh dear, then he dried his tears and went on to destroy Gillard and the Labor party.
