Carrot Question

Does anyone know if there is a genuine reason for not using carrots that are split. The charity I volunteer at was given some carrots and some of them have a split in them. One of the people there told us that we shouldn't use them because of the split. I have cooked them at home before without any problems.

Re: Carrot Question

No.  Our winters aren't that harsh in Aust.  Only snow is in the high country.

Government stopped cattle farming there.

Farmer's just bale hay for the winter for dairy cows.

No indoor gigs for our cows,   lol

Re: Carrot Question

The split carrots would be good for juicing too. Cut off the split bit. All carrots look pretty clean in the supermarket including those with small splits.

I do expect second quality fruit & vege to be cheaper than the best though. Lately I have noticed so some pretty shabby fruit & vege in the supermarket still at high prices.

Re: Carrot Question

Could we be talking about maize? My mum remembers growing maize in the paddocks for stock feed and sweet corn in the vege garden for home. I don't really know what the difference is but she seemed to think they were different things.

Sounds like it. I've seen maize grown as winter feed and turnips as well.

Re: Carrot Question

Sorry, had server trouble today.  Been watching a little circle going round for hours now.

Maize sounds about right.   Yes we have Beef cattle in Australia.

But as far as I knew, the farmers just baled hay for winter.

That's what my uncle did anyway.  But,  he did have only dairy cows.

So if someone out there thinks cows/beef are fed other stuff,

then there ya go.

I'm quite happy to be contradicted.

Re: Carrot Question

Yes, there are farmers in the hawkesbury that grow maize, and other farmers grow the (sweet) corn, in summer.
