Charlotte Dawson's Legacy

I hope that in the future if not today open discussion on Depression and Mental Illness can carry on...

Thoughts and best wishes to all who loved and cared for and about you .

“Charlotte was a beautiful person physically, but she also had a beautiful soul. She was kind, loving and generous,” Vicky said.

“She was a kind, loving and generous person and worked tirelessly for the causes she believed in.

Can I just put my hand up and say something here?

Like any illness, no one can completely understand unless they too have been there. However, that does not mean those on the outside can not feel empathy and compassion for those suffering/fighting

Also it is so heartbreaking for those on the outside too. They too have to fight everyday. Wondering if their loved ones will be able to cope today, wondering if they can actually help today. Feeling helpless and wanting to take their loved ones pain away and not being able to. Not knowing what to do in any given situation, not knowing when to open their arms and when to quietly close the door.

It is also hard on the outsiders too.

If we cant try and understand in our own way, how will the stigma of mental illness ever stop?

Edit to include: my post was kind of in response to a post that doesnt seem to be around? Dont think I was seeing thengs?

I thought this was a sympathy thread for the late Miss Dawson but obviously got that wrong.....againSmiley Frustrated

Hi Windrake, this is a tribute to Charlotte ...it includes (rather than excludes) discussion which Charlotte wanted to raise awareness about .She didn't want Mental Illness to be a hidden/unspoken about topic.

The other thing she spoke out about was online bullying....so that too could come into this thread I suppose to pay tribute to Charlotte.

The biggest tribute imo is to talk about things Charlotte wanted talked about and not be and do what she spoke out against

So, you knew Charlotte personally did you?

The autopsy & toxicology reports havent been done yet, for all you know she may have had an underlying medical condition that she died of.

Assuming isnt the way to go.

I know what was important to Charlotte....it's public knowledge.

To do the exact opposite of things she believed in....would not be a tribute to her.

imo to me it would be like someone giving a racist speech at my funeral

I am very anti racism...and openly so.The above would be an insult to me.

no bullying,no exclusion and discussion of Mental illness and depression in Charlotte's name is apt ..

NB:no assumptions on cause of death have been made by me

Charlotte is non of our business and it's time to recognise that and let her rest.  What is happening here is in no way a tribute to her and as we don't know her it is best to leave well alone.

I hope she has found peace, and that is all that matters.

I don't know anyone who is posted about or who posts on these discussion boards personally ...I try not to talk about them as if I do and give everyone that same benefit ...be they a poster ,celebrity ,MP or anything else...some things are known and I will discuss those openly.I hope that we all can....and that good can come from doing so.

Dawson Suicide Shines Spotlight on Twitter Bullying

Charlotte Dawson, a former judge for Australia’s Next Top Model, was found dead on Saturday morning in her home. The New Zealand Reality TV star was only 47 years old when she took her own life. Reportedly, Dawson was on Twitter before she committed suicide, where she had been receiving cruel messages. Now, the spotlight needs to be shifted to the cyber bullying she had been enduring on Twitter, as that may have been what pushed Dawson over the edge.

Cyber bullying is a major issue that is frequently addressed by organizations concerned with teen depression and suicide rates. The National Crime Prevention Council, for example, is one of the organization that works to combat cyber bullying through awareness campaigns and educating parents. The issue is a difficult one, because one of the appeals of the internet is the extreme freedom it gives its users. Taking action to blanket an issue like this would be considered censorship and would be incredibly difficult to enact.

No one addresses the fact that cyber bullying can follow someone past their teenage years and into adulthood. In fact, this is almost guaranteed if that person reaches any semblance of celebrity in their career from their accomplishments.

Charlotte Dawson had a history of depression and had even attempted suicide at least once before in 2012. Recently there has been a push for the normalization of discussing mental health issues, attempting to bring them back from the realm of the taboo and into the light. However, the media still expects that adults will be stable enough to handle anything that comes their way. Popular show segments such as Jimmy Fallon’s Mean Tweets emphasize this implication, having celebrities read the cruel messages that get sent to them through Twitter on camera for comedy.

Twitter is a hotbed for cruel, anonymous messages that are directed to people in the spotlight, such as Charlotte Dawson, whose decision to finally end her life may have been influenced by the bullying she had been dealing with on the site. People do not generally consider the harsh messages sent to celebrities to be bullying. Many people define bullying as the repeated, targeted verbal or physical assault from one or more people to a particular person. And this is just what “mean tweets” are.

Without realizing it, people will post a cruel opinion of a celebrity to Twitter, tagging the celebrity and thereby sending the message directly to their phone. If this were to happen to someone who were not a celebrity, it would be shocking and unacceptable. It would also be happening on a much smaller scale than what celebrities have to deal with.

I want to say.............. I see no value in RIP threads unless it is a past member of this forum, or someone known to everyone here, personally.

My first thought is................. "they aren't reading this and their families probably won't ever see it"

sorry if it offends anyone.

The best use of these threads is discussion and raising awareness for those who are suffering cyber bullying and depression. What is the point otherwise.?

Scoring points on the mental state of other cs members is pitiful.
