I hope that in the future if not today open discussion on Depression and Mental Illness can carry on...

Thoughts and best wishes to all who loved and cared for and about you .

“Charlotte was a beautiful person physically, but she also had a beautiful soul. She was kind, loving and generous,” Vicky said.

“She was a kind, loving and generous person and worked tirelessly for the causes she believed in.

Baclofen reduces the cravings which is why it is prescribed for those with alcohol problems.

You are both right ... Heart

I don't suffer with depression but have several friends who do and it's never the same for any of them.

Another issue to be taken into account.

"According to one friend, Dawson was fixated on an anti-anxiety drug that she thought would help her quit drinking.

Fairfax Media understands Dawson was taking Baclofen, a muscle relaxant that French cardiologist Olivier Ameisen claimed had cured him of drinking alcohol, sparking international headlines.

''She looked a million dollars when I saw her last week,'' a friend said. ''She had given up drinking and was talking about an anti-depressant she was taking ... Charlotte subscribed to the theory 'you take a pill for everything'. She sent me the link to a story on this drug, believing it would help her.''

Baclofen is like most muscle relaxant tablets, serapx etc............the affect wears off after awhile, and some people take another one to get the continued affect, in some cases it is detrimental to ones self to take more than what is required.

According to Charlotte Dawson, after a termination, ""Maybe it was hormonal, but I felt the early tinges of what I can now identify as my first experience with depression," she wrote."

That can go hand in hand with mental illness as a way to self-medicate. I read somewhere that many alcoholics do suffer from an underlying mental illness. Then, again, substance abuse is now considered to be a disorder.

As I understand it, both darkie and bluecat are correct.

The type of depression darkie and her friend with the terminal illness were suffering is not a mental illness - it derives from severe sadness and hopelessness.

The type of mental illness that it appears Charlotte had was a mental illness - the same as my daughter's bipolar - caused by a chemical imbalance of the brain.

I just hope this poor girl is now at peace and from the condolences given by her work comrades, it seem she was well liked.

Anyway, hopefully, Charlotte Dawson's legacy will be to raise awareness of mental illness.

just doing a quick read about baclofen and its says it has no known abuse potential, so the comment up there about the need to take more and more to get effect is inaccurate. The normal  dose would be enough to help with alcohol issues
