Cigarette taxes will jump by a hefty 13.7 per cent on Monday, the second of four outsized increases in as many years.
The excise on a pack of 20 will climb from $8.13 to $9.25, an increase of $1.12. The excise on apack of 40 will climb from $16.26 to $18.51.
If fully passed on, it will push the price of a packet of 40 above $30 and push the price of some packets of 20 above $20. The increase means the price of cigarettes for casual smokers will approach $1 a stick.
Labor announced a series of four increases mid-last year, with the first of 12.5 per cent due on December 1 followed by three more on September 1 in each of the following three years.
"It's also important that the tax increases are accompanying a great deal of publicity about the harms of smoking and measures such as plain packaging."
Yeah sure. Like they give a rat's backside about ppl's health. Main thing is the cash grab.

Singapore has the correct attitude. Cigarettes are still cheap but there are very few public places where you can smoke them.
This tax ratchetting can only harm the least advantaged people and we may very well see muggings for cigarettes.
The health cost aspect is almost funny. If the tobacco excise and state taxes paid by a smoker went into a special kitty
then their health cost might well be covered.

yep. ....never could work out how come it is okay for shops to set up and sell brewing equipment and stuff yet isn't it illegal to make your own alcohol at home....without a liquor license?.....not sure about this..... there is something about home brewers are not supposed to brew more than a certain volume of home brew-yet brewing shops retail & online do not hesitate to sell very, very large vat thingy's-larger than the volume that is allowed to be brewed at home. I know that home brewers are not allowed to sell their brewed alcoholic concoctions - legally.
I did not know that growing tobacco in Australia was illegal......just posted link about growing tobacco at home because thought it a good suggestion.....same as many, many people brew their own beer and spirits etc at home to save money.
Don't see why growing tobacco plants at home would be illegal? Govt would miss out on tax $'s is all.....*PPppFfffft!

But it's a lot of tax $$$$. They used to do a lot of raids looking for 'chop chop'
(that's the leaf as a whole) people would buy shredding machines and empty
cigarette tubes. I know of one cigarette seller who went under because of
the fines. They were huge.
