Smoking is just not enjoyable anymore anyway as it is just not socially acceptable.

As far as addiction goes, I believe that some of the brands of cigarettes that appeal to young kids had deliberately been tweaked so they are more addictive.  Also, some people can become addicted the first time they try something, others go for years using drug like heroin every now and then, without ever craving it or needing increased dose etc.

While it is very hard to get help with drug addiction, there is plenty available to everybody who wants to stop smoking.  And considering that smoking costs community more than government gets from tobacco taxes, it is only fair that smokers pay more.  Anyway, taxes pay for services that we all need and demand, and tax on tobacco is purely voluntary; if people do not want to pay they can just stop smoking 🙂
