What are they doing back there in the bakery?

It's par baked overseas, then frozen to ship here for final baking.
They've been doing it for some time now.

So they hire minimum staff in the bakery dept who put ready ade par baked bread rolls/loaves in the oven?
Saves on paying wages for quallified bakers.
Their bread products should be made in Australia from Australian wheat/flour.

Would any of you pay the price for a loaf of bread that was grown, milled and baked in Australia?
Australian labour has priced itself out of the market.
By leaps and bounds the cost of labour in Australia has escalated to a point where not only people capable working are demanding higher and higher wages and there are those who just want to sit on their donkey and demand to be kept in the lap of luxury

Coles par baked bread products aren't cheap.
I don't know if places like Bakers Delight ( use frozen dough?, origin?), Woolworths bakery dept make their bread from scratch using Australian flour so can't comment re price comparison with Coles.
Small bakeries bake bread from scratch and it is fairly expensive, a supermarket would be able to do that cheaper (economies of scale).

Sorry Am, but with Woolies bread now at 85c a loaf, I very seriously doubt that.
That is for a white sliced loaf? Bakeries/bakery depts have a whole range of bread/roll products - wholegrain, sourdough, ciabatta etc.
I was comparing a Artisan bakery whose quality bread products cost around $7... if a supermarket made the same quality products (using Aust labour and flour/ingredients) as those smaller bakeries then the supermarket could sell them at lower price.
I (did) prefer Coles bakery as they have a wider range than our local (small) Woolies which sells moslty white bread rolls and not much else in that line.

The only bread I like is the 4 seed one from Woolies, usually $3 a loaf ....
