I suppose the term deli came from migrants (just guessing). At the time I came there was also a large Italian immigration and some would set up shops selling small goods and continental items. Now a deli is just a small convenience store. (I think I'm talking Americanese).
No. Deli is an abbreviation of Delicatessen. Which roughly translated means "refined eating".
As against bangers and mash, I suppose.

No, we don't get that here. I get a 1000 channels, but I've never seen it, lol.
Out of a 1000 I only use about 80. On early saturday mornings...The Rifleman! It's on right now.

When I started school, went to a shop - asked in my fresh Norfolk accent for an 'iced lolly' - lady said :"they're all nice love - which do you want?"

When I was a kid, the local Delicatessen was run by a lovely couple.
Mum wouldn't tell me why they had numbers tattooed on their arms
Don't think they sold sauerkraut either
