The Victorian meatworks have been required at 2/3 capacity to allow better social distancing and employees are now required to wear full PPE similar to doctors and nurses. ie. the N95 ( think that's the one ) grade respirators, face shields and full length disposable gowns. It wouldn't be much fun and workers have gone on strike demanding pay increases due to the restrictive PPE ( fair enough )
The strikes, plus govt. requirement that meatworks operate at 2/3 capacity, plus loss of export markets is slamming wholesale demand for lamb. Prices have collapsed to 60% of six weeks ago and wool is trading at 40% of the prices of two years ago. We hear a lot about the loss of jobs in the hospitality and entertainment industries, but what most people are not aware of is that Agriculture ranks third ( after the two industries mentioned ) for jobs lost due to COVID 19. ( source - Weekly Times newspaper article last week )
