Cyclist and 1Meter rule

I just saw Current Affair where they showed a car turn left into two cyclist. The car had his left indicator on - looked like he was travelling at very slow speed - the cyclist overtook the car on the car's left and he turned left into them. Was it his fault or the cyclist who overtook on the car's left?

 

They were talking about making a '0ne meter' law. I cannot see how this will work on many roads. To keep one meter away while overtaking a cyclist or group of cyclist would put you over the centre line in many cases - risking a head on collision??? It would be OK when there is a separate lane but SO MANY roads do not have enough room for it.

 

Opinions on this rule?? How would it work?  Opinions on the Current Affair accident?

I've never in my life read that in my town a cyclist has committed a hit and run.

Is it that common that we need to give more of our money to the greedy councils? IMO talk of rego on bikes is just too much....I want my freedom back to live my life, without harming others and without working all week just to pay to live.

Don't worry I'll help with the take over. LOL

 

My problem with bike riders is that they can't see what is in front of me and if there is a stick in my way then I will swerve to avoid it because if I go over it I am likely to go head over turkey and once I am on the ground it will take a crane to get me back up on my feet.

 

Unless I can hear the bell then I have no warning and I can't walk looking backwards all the time.

Yeah I'm fully on your side in respect to walking paths and cyclists forced to use them.
I ride to work and during the early hrs there's mainly older people walking....I slow down ring my bell, yell lol...they don't hear until I pass them. I do say sorry (or thanks if they hear and move) as sometimes they get the scare of their lives.

Like I said, our roads are lagging so far behind other countries in regards to shared usage. We can legally ride on roads, the roads need upgrading and drivers need education.
Have any of us had any in regards to cyclists on the roads? I'm not old and got my licence in vic.....nothing mentioned about cyclists.

I used to ride a lot, and my daughter and son in law ride as much as they can.  I find it interesting that drivers get so aggressive about bikes being in their way; don't they realise that if the people riding bikes to work would instead drove their cars, there would be lot more traffic & less parking spots.  Drivers should be grateful that some people are willing to cycle.  And the government has to make much better bike path; lets look at the path in Europe, where many major cities have whole lanes for bikes.  Cycling reduces pollution, keeps population fitter,  and roads less congested.

what education? I know - as you pass a cyclist, be prepared for them to do something stupid.

 

The part that gets me is -  I drive my car past you at the required 1meter - as I pass, you move over for whatever reason - now I am breaking the law because I am not 1 meter away from you.... I get a fine - why? because you moved over to avoid  a piece of gravel.

 

And you also said that you ring your bell and yell at pedestrians to get out of your way - when they have every right to be walking on the foot-path - actually more right than you have to ride on the foot-path. So, do you suffer from foot-path rage??

 

and Yes, I have encountered pedestrians who have been run into by cyclist - on footpaths as well as pedestrian crossings.

 

anyway, I only started this thread to get people's reactions to the TV show, and how it would be policed. I'm off to bed.

wow its funny seeing cyclists expecting cars to slow down, stop and go around them, and give them lots of room yet expect pedestrians on a foot path to get out of their way. .

cyclists can't overtake on the left side of a motor vehicle if that motor vehicle is indicating or appears to be turning left, except for locations
such as traffic lights where motor vehicles are stationary at a red light.

 

i'd like to see the footage though. if the car was going slow indicating to turn left.. the driver must have been aware the cyclists were in the vicinity

Dear cyclist, see that orange light flashing on the left back corner of that car ahead of you? It means it has intentions to cross your path, and MAY have trouble spotting you racing up the inside. If you are serious about protecting your OWN safetly, work out what that flashing orange light means, and how about YOU slowing down until the risk has passed?

As for the one metre rule, yep, fair enough and all for it. As long as the cyclist show a little regard for their own safety, and does as drivers are demanded to do and share the road, stay in a reasonably straight line and not use more road space than is reasonably necessary. See all to many of them trying to squeeze that bit extra out of themselves and straying all over the road. Honestly, the way some of the propoganda is spouted, cyclists own the road, car drivers are the enemy and have to bear all the responsibility.
