I just saw Current Affair where they showed a car turn left into two cyclist. The car had his left indicator on - looked like he was travelling at very slow speed - the cyclist overtook the car on the car's left and he turned left into them. Was it his fault or the cyclist who overtook on the car's left?
They were talking about making a '0ne meter' law. I cannot see how this will work on many roads. To keep one meter away while overtaking a cyclist or group of cyclist would put you over the centre line in many cases - risking a head on collision??? It would be OK when there is a separate lane but SO MANY roads do not have enough room for it.
Opinions on this rule?? How would it work? Opinions on the Current Affair accident?

jim i used to ride 20 miles a day back and forth to work ..had some close calls with vehicles too especially buses (no fault of mine) but always gave way to them and kept an eye out. on a collision i know who'd win!
the only time a cyclist bugged me was when a couple of cyclists doubled up riding side by side on a narrow road.. i couldnt overtake coz of on coming traffic ...had to slow down to their pace, beeped my horn at him... the doe turned his head then rode behind his mate single lane with an embarrassed look on its face
i do think some riders needs to be aware of whats happening around them, for their own good

i was on an 80kph single lane road the other day when the truck in front of me stopped suddenly. i was able to stop because i don't speed but the trick coming up behind me had to swerve and go off on to the gravel to avoid running up the back of my car. it was far too close for my liking. after the truck in front moved again it pulled out and passed a cyclist who was riding very slowly on the edge of the road. there was not enough room for the 1 metre rule unless we pulled out over the white line into the lane of incoming traffic. it was a dangerous situation. the cyclist could not match the speed of the traffic and caused a danger. if roads are wide enough fine but cyclists who hold up traffic or who get in the way are not safe to themselves or drivers.

In 60 years of riding bike I have never damaged anybody's car. It is virtually impossible to cause a scratch such as you described by a bicycle. As there is no metal part that sticks out such a way that it could make long mark on a car while the bike is being ridden. The widest part are the handlebars and if they would come in contact with vehicle the rider would fall. So stop making up ridiculous scenarios. Get over this hate, or one day you will hurt somebody and end up in jail.

what about the damage to the front of a car when it hits the bike riding through a red light, or the damage the car does trying to avoid idiots on bikes, just because no contact is made with the bike they can still be at fault, or the medical bills for the pedestrians they hit.
Both good reasons to have number plates and be required to have third party bodily insurance for their victims

A Current Affair website and it was a story on Thursday night, the whole story goes for about 6 or 7 minutes and you will see the footage a couple of times during the story which I slowed down and rewatched a few times. Usually you just click on the story you want to see and then click on the arrow to start watching it, but last night it was a bit iffy so it might be better today.

I will be grateful for another opinion of the van and the 2 bikes riders because if I am interpreting it incorrctly then I would like to know.

Cyclists in city traffic annoy the shirt out of me but I acknowledge their right to use the road.
I always give them a wide berth. They only have soft little bodies after all. Not like the motorist in their metal shell.
