We don't know yet exactly what sort of lockdown it will be.
We don't know yet exactly how severe it will be, what things will be further restricted.
We don't know yet exactly how long the lockdown will be imposed.
But we know that there will be a lockdown.
I'm so disheartened by the fact that this was preventable. What possessed case number 5 (the case who contracted COVID-19 from the Wollert cluster (via a missing link, probably?) to ignore his symptoms for more than 4 days? What possessed him to go out and about while symptomatic? Was he wearing a mask? (I'll take a wild stab at it and say no, he probably wasn't.) Was he socially distancing? (Clearly not.)
Taken in conjunction with the general complacency and vaccine reluctance, the discarding of masks in public transport, the lack of enforcement (with police chiefs being - in my view - a bit ridiculous in scoffing at the task of enforcing health directives), the surging together of people much closer than 1.5 metres when we know - surely we call know! - that this pandemic is far from over, and the number of people who are shaking hands and kissing and hugging... it's making my heart sink like a concrete boot.
I skipped wearing a mask twice recently, I admit. I had it with me, but I popped into the bank and thought it would be a good idea not to obscure my face for security reasons. I also went to a supermarket for one item, late at night just before it closed. It was not wise. Oh! And one more time... at the Melbourne Recital Centre while enjoying a fabulous concert. Every other time, yes, I've masked up. But now I feel foolish, and I won't be making any exceptions.
Stupid-decision-making people could be walking around in any part of Melbourne or indeed Victoria, refusing to be tested, brushing off their symptoms, scoffing at the notion of wearing a mask or sanitising their hands.
And more political point-scoring is being launched as well. I've no patience for it; we need to be working together to resolve these problems, and stamp out this outbreak. Ironically it is because we as a country have been doing so well that the complacent behaviour has crept back.
Fellow Melbournians and Victorians, we just have to be strong, and let's do our best to reiterate that the hygiene behaviours (
and unfortunately now (probably)
as well) MUST be followed until Australia has achieved herd immunity - and even after that, we should at the very least maintain hand hygiene and cough etiquette.
Let's try to lead the world into effective long-term behaviour change.
And God help us all as we enter into whatever lockdown hell lies before us. *virtual hug* - because that's the only sort I can give you.

164 new cases announced today.
If anyone is living in NSW, it might make them feel dejected or that they're losing the battle.
They are not.
The good news is the numbers haven't really escalated greatly. In Melbourne last year, they rose steadily to 400 a day and peaked at over 800 a day in August. Yet we still had it beaten by Nov.
So don't give up on lockdown, it won't work overnight but it will work (to paraphrase an old ad).
I agree, springyzone. We have defeated it once, and we can defeat it again.
I just want to hope there won't be more protests - what an irony they had to protest on the day with the most cases since the new outbreak (even if of course they didn't know when they organized the protest).

Have Sydney stopped repatriation flights ? redirected misc international flights to other cities ? redirected shipping to other ports ? Testing house to house in persistent red suburbs ?
An interstate total blockage will be ugly

I was disappointed about the protests.
Last year we had the big BLM marches etc and after that, it turned out a few at the rallies had in fact had covid. We all know how well that worked out for Melbourne. Not that it was the only spreading point but every little bit adds up.
I am afraid you'll see the same in Sydney and maybe worse as they didn't wear masks. It may put any easing of lockdowns back by a couple of weeks, which is a shame.

Hop onto the roundabout. Here we go again...
7-day snap lockdown. You know the drill: 5km radius, no weddings, funerals capped at 10, 5 reasons only to leave the house, strict masking rules, NO VISITOR rule emphasised ... add a pinch of frustration and tears... stir well, cook for 7 days, and eat your portion.

Hopefully it will only be 7 days.
I suspect there are some in our community though who have not been strictly following the no visitors rule.
We are following it as best we can but must admit I have had to break the 5km rule etc in order to give care/caregiving. (for grandchildren and also mental health & physical health reasons to support a family member.)
I do feel a lot for anyone who had a wedding planned for this year or next as the situation would be a bit fraught. Probably best bet would be to plan for a celebration of 50 or under and hope for the best!

springy, you know you're permitted to go beyond 5km if you have to provide care...?
Usual caveats, though, of course; in Sydney, for instance, there are still far too many people using the compassionate reasons/caregiving reasons as an excuse to continue inter-household family visits. It's so worrying that so many of the new cases have not been in isolation or quarantining throughout their infectious period, and that quite a lot of these cases have been transmitted in inter-household situations.
(I wonder if the Melbournians' experience of last year's brutal and long lockdown has made us more likely to comply with the public health orders. Not every individual, of course; we still get our share of rule-breakers who think that spouting nonsensical "I am a sovereign entity" and "Freeeeeeedom!" lines makes them more enlightened and somehow immune to the real threat of contracting COVID-19... but by and large, Melbournians do seem to be - in spite of everything - abiding by the rules intended to keep us safe.)
I've got to stock up on some more P2 masks. I must have gone through more than 300 of these so far. Expensive-ish but offering very good protection against airborne transmission... it's a no-brainer in my view.
It's just such a pity that the weather's so cold. There's no possibility of a small socially-distanced outdoor gathering to celebrate family member's birthday today, as it would make at least one family member shiver pitifully the entire time.
I've also had to TWICE cancel a dinner to celebrate my best friend's birthday recently. I can't even say to her "Come over and I'll cook the birthday meal". No visitors allowed.

Yes, I know I am allowed over the 5km limit for caregiving but I still feel awkward at times, especially going into someone else's home. But it has to be done.
Like you, we have had the cancelled birthday thing happen a lot.
A friend of mine had a surprise party coming up. Obviously she didn't know about it but her daughter was organising a high tea morning at Mary Eats Cake. That was at the start of June and we had a sudden lock down so we have not been in a position to have it at all.
All I can think of is maybe we need to be like my sister. She turned 60 in May last year. Obviously no party possible. So this year on her birthday, her husband organised a table at a restaurant and we were able to go ahead. I liked the balloon arrangement.😁 If it isn't clear, that's a 60 plus a 1. 😅
Maybe next year will give us a clearer run.

7th August : time will tell

Here we are, two weeks into Lockdown #6...
... and there are some people having parties and get-togethers and pub crawls and so on.
It's selfish and short-sighted of these few. The rest of us are doing what we need to do. We're all sick of the restrictions - no question about that. But the restrictions are not our enemy: the Delta variant of COVID-19 is the common enemy and we have got to squash it like a 10-tonne weight on a hapless Monty Python character.
Poor NSW. Those horrific case numbers are continuing to build; it's clear that non-compliance with the public health orders is rife.

SYDNEY : Non-urgent elective surgery have now been suspended , so a hidden hardship of suffering , for those many who have had their day in hospital delayed
Non-urgent elective surgery suspended in Greater Sydney - News (nsw.gov.au)
Might be an opportunity to assist , by those States covid free , to arrange ( but not pay for ) mercy medical flights out and treatment for those that had non-urgent procedures suspended , after appropriate precautions are provided
Afterall we allow entry into Australia from plague countries
