....when there was no airconditioning. And sitting under the curtain of the willow tree on old patched cotton sheets, just reading; or listening to the grandparents telling us their stories of the olden days.

I remember when my mom made me go through the checkout with her so she could get twice the limit. I remember getting 3 times the limit and just having them ring it up seprately as 3 diffrent transactions. The casheer was just an employee who worked there, they didn't care and would do that if you asked.

My mum was lke that with the "limit" specials - she would get me the lot, then my sister and then her own so we would end up with HEAPS of one item.
I remember the butcher always gave us a cocktail frank to eat while mum bought the meat.

Or for that little old lady to root around in her huge purse for that last tuppence ha'penny after paying with stray coinage..........my mum would often pay it herself, usually by throwing a few pennies at the offender's head............(j/k)

Goodness, I've not experienced most of what you all have posted....but, I wish I had with some.
Only time I've heard of someone at the grocery store picking out your groceries is if you are a 'shut in' and need help with your grocery shopping. I can't imagine going to the store and sitting down and waiting for someone else to choose your groceries for you.
I think I'm way too picky to be happy with that. 😞

Some of the grocers lines were bulk and the variety was limited , so he used to weigh out the sugar, flour, salt, saos, etc. snap off the cakes of sunlight soap, and bag them while you sat.
Same at the greengrocers. Nothing pre-packaged. Fruit was usually put into your own string bag, peas/beans/carrots etc wrapped in newspaper.
And olive oil was only available at the chemist.
