Do you object to BAG INSPECTIONS at stores?

Do you object to staff asking to inspect your bag? (they are only doing their job)

Will you shop at a  store that asks to inspect your bag or will you go elsewhere?

Do bag inspections and security checks help to stop shop lifting and keep prices down?

If you object WHY?

Do you think that objecting to a bag inspection makes a person look guilty or they are guilty?

Rememer that its a condition of entry at just about every major /medium/small store in Australia

I accept their right to ask me. I persit with my right to refuse. it's as simple as that.

The signs say "please make your bags available for inspection" or "Please present your bags for inspection" . . and I do. . . I do just but nothing more.

It's my solution to the humiliating circumstance of standing at the checkout while a shop assistant looks into or rifles through my bag.

If they try to detain me (no one has tried this yet) I will just walk away, telling them that I am going to go about my lawful business.

If they lay hands on me or otherwise try to unlawfully imprison me then my lawyer and my bank manager will just both rub their hands in glee. 😉

Depends on the size of the bag.

I can't believe people get so iffy about being asked occasionally to open their bag for inspection on exiting a store. Do it, and forget about it 1 sec later...save all the angst.

If my handbag was big, well yes I would let them see, but my handbag isnt big, barely fits my purse, phone etc in it, and no one is going to look in it.........it is my personal things in there.....

NSW:

Personal handbags the size of a sheet of A4 paper or smaller should not be checked, unless the shopkeeper is certain the handbag contains goods from that shop which have not been paid for

purple :If you look at the website for your State's fair trading dept or equiv, it should say what size personal handbags can be checked.

I know my daughter was asked to open her very small bag on exiting JB Hi FI, which she knew probably wasn't right, but showed it anyway becuase she doesn't like to make a fuss.. She went into the store and decided to leave to get something to eat first, so was only in the store a very short time, so maybe that is why they suspected she stole something.

Am, I think it comes down to not understanding what their rights and responsibilities as customers, are.

Perhaps sometimes the 'door staff' don't know the customers rights either.. re handbag size. My daughters handbag was so small a DVD wouldn't fit in it, nor most of the stuff they have on their shelves.

Acrtually, Donna keeps saying who would steal stuff and put it in their handbags. If the store can only request you to open a personal handbag larger than A4 size.. then that means they are only asking to see in larger handbags that would have more room to hide stuff in.

The conditions are actually specific.   If the bag is smaller than  A4 paper, it cannot be checked.   Shops have signs with pictures of actual sizes so customers can compare their bags and have an understanding of what can and cannot be checked.

I have absolutely no doubt that can be the case.

Re: Do you object to BAG INSPECTIONS at stores

meep. I comply . .  to the letter with the requirements of the shops. I read the notices very carefully and I am careful to comply, but I won't go any further than what their signs ask me to do.

Like I said, I have asked many shop assistants about this and they all tell me that they don't have the legal right to even touch my bag, let alone open it and look through it.

How many people on this thread (besides me) has asked any shop assistant about this?
