Do you object to BAG INSPECTIONS at stores?

Do you object to staff asking to inspect your bag? (they are only doing their job)

Will you shop at a  store that asks to inspect your bag or will you go elsewhere?

Do bag inspections and security checks help to stop shop lifting and keep prices down?

If you object WHY?

Do you think that objecting to a bag inspection makes a person look guilty or they are guilty?

Rememer that its a condition of entry at just about every major /medium/small store in Australia

Re: Do you object to BAG INSPECTIONS at stores

I don't mind if they want to check my bag, but what really annoys me when I've been at Aldi and have only bought Aldi branded items, I go to Woolworths and when I get asked to show my Aldi bag they always ask for the receipt and match it with everything in the bag.

I actually once got questioned at Target when I had an video in my bag as I had been at a friend's house; the lady asked to see my bag, saw the video and I said it was mine and that they don't even sell it at this store, so she called someone on  the radio to check, then when she found out that they didn't sell the VHS that I had in my bag she let me go and told me not to walk around with videos in my bag....

Still loling @ claim of valid reasons. The stores have bag check policies and valid reasons for checking bags.

The majority of posters in this thread don't have any objection to stores carrying out their bag check policy, and don't mind having their bags checked.

Stores have bag check policies.. time to accept that and co-operate on the probably infrequent times one is asked to open up their bags for a staff member to glance into.

I have never had my personal handbag checked.  I have never seen anyone else get theirs checked either, it is usually carry shopping bags or backpacks the staff ask to look in.

Yeah, patchoo that happened to me in Kmart as I posted before. I had Darrell Lea chocs in my carry bag and they wanted to see the receipt (which was in my wallet). Kmart don't sell Darrell Lea...

Shoplifting is not ok and no I would not allow staff to treat my customers as thieves.

Then how do you stop the shoplifting if you don't check the bags?

Installing security cameras, monitoring every customer and when suspicious behaviour is detected, alert the security guards who will either be able to stop the customer in the store or initiate  pursuit......I presume.....

have every item fitted with security tags could be another option.

Well, if going by some definitions of bag checks mean "treating you like a criminal", then wouldn't the above be treating every person within the store equally as a criminal?

Yes, I have an opinion. No you don't have to agree with it. Yes I do have a right to it.

Re: Do you object to BAG INSPECTIONS at stores

Yes, I do object to bag searches and being made to feel like a suspect . . . and, I have found the solution.

The signs in the shops say "Please present your bag for inspection" or "Please make your bag available for inspection" . .  and I do . . I do just that an no more.

Then when I'm asked to open my bag I just outright refuse. What I tell them is this  . .

"Here is my bag, if you have the legal right to open it and search it then please go right ahead".

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If I was a check out chick and you placed a bag in front of me and indicated politely it was available for inspection, I would be more than happy to assist you.  With your permission, of course.

You never know, you might come across a friendly, helpful and experienced shop assistant. Smiley Wink

Meep didn't write the above bolded quote someone else did,  and has written the same thing five times.  They really seem proud of it though I can't begin to think why.  A shopping   bag check for me takes 2 seconds, I open it, they glance down, and that's that.  And a lot of the time I think the sales assistants are very embarrassed about it.

Re: Do you object to BAG INSPECTIONS at stores

When I have done bag checks, I just have a quick glance to see if there are obvious things like batteries, razors.  I'm not interested in what else is in your bag and I bet if you asked me 30 secs afterwards what was in your bag, I wouldn't remember.  I wouldn't even remember the colour of your purse or wallet.

Probably the only thing I would remember is if there was a gun in the bag.

I hate having to ask to look in someones but if I don't, management give me hell.  So if any of you objectors are willing to pay my wages, I'll gladly stop asking

bravo happyroo.

I hope you dont come across too many like the few on here who claim they dont show their bag when asked.

To be honest, i think they are full of it and always show their bags anyway

In our family, a handbag or wallet is the property of the person who has their belongings in it. I wouldn't presume to go into anyone's without permission, same for them.

bag checkers arnt "going into" your bag. They cant even touch it. They are having a quick glance in. Thats all

My reply was about donna's comment re her bag................ and no family member allowed to touch it.

I have no problem with a shop person looking in my bag. It is smaller than A4 though............. however, if they want to look in it, I still would comply.

Not too many thankfully, but they have always been middle age women who carry around handbags that are big enough to be almost overnighters.  When people object, it does make me slightly suspicious.  I start thinking 'what have they got in there?'
