Domestic Violence

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says he believes a meeting between federal, state and territory leaders is the best forum to tackle domestic violence.

His comment follows a call by Opposition Leader Bill Shorten in January for a national crisis summit on the issue so survivors, police, child protection officers, women's shelter staff, judges and federal, state and territory leaders could devise a national plan.

Seventeen in every 100 Australian women has faced violence from a current or previous partner, and on average one is killed each week.

"It's a national disgrace," Mr Shorten told reporters in Canberra.

What do you think needs to see changed ??

Re: Domestic Violence

And by the way, domestic violence within a male gay relationship is exceedingly rare, because there are more happy gay relationships without the woman nit-picking, nagging, winging and egging the male partner on. This does not happen between two men and because of this there is harmony and happiness in the coupling, not the clash of the sexes you find in straight relationships. Hope I've educated you. ๐Ÿ™‚

Maybe Grace.  That is quite shocking, partly because it's not nearly as common.

Re: Domestic Violence

I have a question, for anyone really. Is it assualt, is it domestic violence, if there are no marks or bruses?, or if the police leave the marks and claim their victim did it to themself? Then what of the verbal abuse?, is that relivant at all?

In the home, in a homeless shelter, in a holding or detention cell where part of the abuse would be, subjected to extreemly cold temps, without clothing or fabric of any kind, and uncomfortable on cement and steel for longer than a week, unable to move away to find warmth and comfort elsewhere?

My take, if it's something that carries with a person, follows them unable to shed the memories of it, throughout their life, then it qualifys, bruses or not.

Re: Domestic Violence

Joanie, of course it is domestic violence if there are no marks or bruises.  Police used to be taught how to assault without leaving marks or bruises.  I do not know if they still are.

Below are some of the forms that domestic violence may take

Physical - If someone is hurting you, or threatening to hurt you, a loved one or a pet, then you will need to take some action. For more information about what physical abuse is, see โ€˜What is physical abuse?โ€™

Emotional - This form of violence is often unrecognised and can be very hurtful. To find out more about emotional abuse, read โ€˜What is emotional abuse?โ€™

Economic - Having money and being able to make decisions about it, is one means of being independent. If someone is controlling your money, keeping you financially dependent, or making you ask for money unreasonably, then this is a form of violence

Social โ€“ Social violence occurs in relationships that often include other forms of violence. If someone is insulting you or teasing you in front of other people, keeping you isolated from family and friends, controlling what you do and where you go, then they are being violent and you may need to take some action

Spiritual - This type of violence involves a situation where you are not allowed to have your own opinions about religion, cultural beliefs, and values, or your spirituality is manipulated to keep you feeling powerless.

How do you know it's not as common? That is my point? Often the husbands will cover through their wives out of shame, embarrassment or because of the overriding male compulsion to protect their wives and kids.

Look at all the "accidents" men are treated for in hospital - I believe alot of them are caused by their wives.

Interesting responce to my questions. I wish those at the domestic violence shelter felt that way.

Physical - If someone is hurting you, or threatening to hurt you

My sister and her husband, my nefues, the police, but not recently

Emotional - This form of violence is often unrecognised and can be very hurtful

Still unclear on that one, i'm guessing cyber bullying qualifys.

Economic - Having money and being able to make decisions about it, is one means of being independent. If someone is controlling your money, keeping you financially dependent, or making you ask for money unreasonably, then this is a form of violence

My sister having control over mom's estate, having me arrested and taking the house and all I had in it and on the property. That was a big loss, I had a lifetime of valuables there not including the property itself.

Social โ€“ Social violence occurs in relationships that often include other forms of violence. Theres a more recent one. At the homeless shelter in Columbus, That was a messed up situation how I got the blame and was moved to the men's area. I only stayed in that area one night before signing myself out and coming back here.

Spiritual - This type of violence involves a situation where you are not allowed to have your own opinions about religion, cultural beliefs, and values, or your spirituality is manipulated to keep you feeling powerless.

theres one i have not experanced, or if i did, it didn't bother me. I think to qualify for that domestic violence shelter, I have to be fleeing an attacker who is currently after me and in iminent danger. Thats how they make it sound, Or could be that they don't beleve me in what I told them. Thing is I don't bruse easy, and heal quickly. I didn't fight back when attacked at the shelter as I wanted there to be no doubt who the aggressor was, and i still got the blame, I just cried out for her to stop as i was being punched and kicked, and they move me, like it was my fault but not surprizing, story of my life. I can't even get the shelter here to let me take a shower there. If I want a shower, i have to take a 3 hour drive to Columbus and go to the Y.
