February national unemployment hit 10.9%

We have been told time and time again that we are on a  good wicket and that people  are complaining for no reason... I know for a fact that people are on struggle street... I could not really understand how our interest rates are low because people are not spending, new housing numbers are incredibly low, businesses are sacking people and/or shutting up shop and the government is saying we have never had it better..

we hear that the unemployment rates are only about 5.4% and then people talk about even working 1 hour a week means they are classed as employed so the figures are skewed...... I could never really find proof of that statement..

well last night I managed to find this info... it sums it all up perfectly..

The ABS made changes in 2006 to include working 1 hour a week and did not include anyone that was unable to work... that is a very deceptive change...

Re: February national unemployment hit 10.9%

Has anyone ever seen me say anything to suggest that I personally feel people on any welfare payments are bludgers, whinge about nothing, have a sense of entitlement, want everything for nothing, that they should feel shame, that they are a waste of our tax dollars, that a Government must save money?

That is not MY way of thinking.

Cat each of those 3 steps are important. If you or anyone else can't progress to employment I do not assume it's because they are lazy or feel entitled or anything else negative. If I did think that way perhaps I would see being on any government payment as a shameful thing.

I'm sorry if some see it that way...that thinking hurts people most in need of which you were one.

The 10 plus % figure is far more believable figure than the dodgy rubbery official figure.

Interest rates are low to try to encourage people to borrow money to spend to keep the economy going, what hasn't been taken into account is the huge increases of fees and taxes well above inflation that has reduced the amount of money people have left over after all the things they cant avoid paying are paid.

I don't think they have worked out that its the 70-80% of the battlers that actually spend most of their money that keeps things ticking over and these are the people that are under employed and had their wages reduced via dodgy work place agreements that haven't even kept pace with the artificially low inflation figures, take for instance the recent postal charges gouge, how many people do you think this will affect here in Oz when it also gives sellers from over seas an even bigger advantage on price.

One doesn't have to be real bright to see there are less people spending money and how many businesses are closing or reducing workers.

I am not sure how anyone can accept the official line that all is well

Public sector cuts take their toll: Worse to come if Libs win18 February 2013, 11:23am

Public sector employment across Australia fell last year for the first time in more than a decade as conservative state governments implemented deep cuts to services. The public sector union is gearing up for a major campaign to protect jobs and services from further cuts.

A NEW report by the ACTU has revealed the full cost of the harsh cuts to public sector jobs made by Coalition state governments in the last 12 months.

The research, by ACTU Economic Policy Officer Matt Cowgill, found that the number of public sector jobs in Australia fell for the first time in more than a decade after Coalition state governments last year sacked tens of thousands of workers and made deep cuts to public services.

More than 50,000 public administration and safety jobs were lost around the country in the year to November 2012, with about half of those cuts taking place between May and November as state governments in New South Wales and Queensland executed radical job cuts. And more job losses are on the way as state governments foreshadow further deep cuts to their wages bills.

The ACTU Jobs Report found that employment in public administration and safety fell by 6.9% - by far the...

The research comes at a crucial point in time for public services in Australia.

With conservative governments across Australia and around the world making massive public service cu...gn

State defies watchdog on job losses Date June 6, 2012

THE Baillieu government has spent tens of thousands of dollars on legal fees defying an order by the industrial umpire to hand over key documents detailing public sector job losses.

Fair Work Australia had given the government to 10am yesterday to produce crucial documents revealing how the terminating of 4200 public sector positions would be spread across 11 public sector departments.

The order was made ahead of talks to resolve a long-running pay battle with the Community and Public Sector Union, which had successfully argued the documents were a key part of the government case and should be available for scrutiny.

But in a last-minute scramble, government lawyers emailed Fair Work asking for ''a considerable amount more time'' to further build a legal case. The email reveals the government will once again attempt to argue that the documents should be immune from scrutiny because they are not in the public interest.

Gathering statistics is no different from surveys......it depends on the criteria.........ie what questions are asked or omitted.
