Fishing rods

I don't fish but am thinking of buying my nephew a rod. What's the best one?

Jimmy, there is a 24 hour bait and tackle shop a few ks away, 24 hour, I thought maybe it was a front for a drug running op. Woman LOL I will have to pretend i have a little knowledge or i will walk out with an empty purse, I am a salespersons dream.

Everything should have price tags on them, just tell them you want to look first if they ask. If your not sure after looking just give them a set amount you want to spend and you'll be ok.

Living on an island I didn't think we had 24 hour bait and tackle shops, but googling I see we do. *wonders if they're a front? could be convenient, lol*. I can also shop on line a them....maybe give that a look before going to one.

Re: Fishing rods

How old is your nephew and is the rod for beach fishing, river fishing or deep sea fishing?

P.S. I know nothing about fishing rods.

Re: Fishing rods

I recently bought a terrific rod n reel from k-mart for my nephew.

Both rod n reel were very well known name brands.

Can't think of them now but my nephew said they are very good.

I paid around $80.

Re: Fishing rods

I think it was a Shimano reel and a carbon fibre rod.

Multi-purpose for both pier and boat.

At 9 I'd be cautious about letting him cast a line. People near him would likely end up getting hooked, or hook himself (even adults do this)

I'd start out with a cheap set up, because even though the rod and reel might be cheap you still have to get lures, hooks, and a tackle box. I'd start him on something like this....

I started fishing as a kid with my GM. We'd use a bambo pole and just drop the line in. Probably the safest way to fish, because getting a hook stuck in you needs a surgeon to remove....usually.

Re: Fishing rods

Thanks Jimmy, his Dad casts, i went with them - it was fun but i was quietly hoping they wouldn't catch anything (poor fish). I want to get him a really good one because he is a lovely boy, all he wanted for xmas was a book about animals. His mother is a "tiger mum" so his life is extremely structured and i want to spoil him a little.
