Re: Four Corners tonight on Halal

is also says that 90% of funding comes from consumers -10% comes from manufacturers etc ( those who pay for the logo on their product)

I haven't read any halal submissions to the senate iinquiry, but I would imagine they say similar

The thing is you have no way of knowing though Deb whether they passed on the cost of certification to you.

Re: Four Corners tonight on Halal

You can imagine all you like, doesn't change the fact that Kosher is 90% self funded and Halal is a 'for profit' business model.
Watch the four corners story and the certifiers openly state it's about profit.
On the ACNC data base you'll find numerous financials from certifiers. Grab your calculator and you'll quickly see that the real cost of providing certification is only around 20% of revenue raised.
Massive difference between Kosher and Halal Certification.

I just read it, so it's actually a submission to the senate inquiry - i haven't read any submissions as i'm just not that into ti

it says,

We are informed by NSWKA that about

90% of the revenue of NSWKA comes from kosher consumers within the Jewish community, through fees generate
d via kosher catered functions, kosher butchers and other kosher shops.

The revenue from certification

fees paid by manufacturers supplying the general market is only about 10% of the overall revenue. Our understanding is that the amounts involved in the latter are too small to impact on prices. In each case the annual certification fee represents a fraction of a cent per unit produced over the year

maybe wayward got a bit confused by that ? there is the 90% - consumer pays and later on they go on to say they fund jewsih charities same as the the halal people say

so it sounds very similar to halal certification to me - but I'm no expert

I think maybe you' need a pair of glasses Deb!

The Jewish community meaning the Jewish consumer generates the fees by buying from kosher butchers and shops and catering for kosher catered events.

That means that only 10 of Kosher fees are raised my the producers of kosher products.

It might sound similar to Halal certifictation to you, but it's actually almost the complete opposite!

but I'm no expert"

You got that right! And you reckon Wayward's confused!

Re: Four Corners tonight on Halal

don't leave out this bit

From their transcript explaining their submission

"Thirdly, as regards fees paid for certification, an estimated 90 per cent of the revenue of the two major kosher certifiers comes from consumers who are specifically looking to purchase kosher products or services. Most, but by no means all, of these consumers come from within the Jewish community.

however  when I purchased my jar of vegemite, I was not looking to fund either kosher or halal

This is where you come in:

"Most, but by no means all, of these consumers come from within the Jewish community."

Re: Four Corners tonight on Halal

I fail to see how you can't understand what they have said Debra, really they couldn't be any clearer.
90% of the costs are made by those consumers that WANT certification, the remaining 10% is made by those companies that certify.

I'm more than happy for those consumers that WANT halal certification to pay for it, just as I'm more that happy for those consumers that WANT Christian certification to pay for it.

If you want to make comparisons then comparing Christian certification to Halal Certification is more accurate than Kosher to Halal.
