1. Genetically modified foods (or GM foods) arefoods produced from organisms that have had specific changes introduced into their DNA using the methods of genetic engineering. There a two main types of genetically modified crops. 

Bt, or bacillus thuringiensis, is a type of soil-dwelling bacteria that produces a protein toxic to many insects. Bt crops are engineered to produce the Bt toxin within the plant itself, acting as a built-in insecticide. Bt toxin kills crop pests by dissolving the insect’s gut lining.
Roundup Ready crops are engineered to be resistant to Roundup, a Monsanto brand of herbicide. The active ingredient in Roundup herbicide is glyphosate, a commonly used weed-killer.

I know very little about this topic. I'm Interested to hear what ya'll know or think about GMO foods.

It is tragic when we see this jetho. I guess programmed robots can't left their heads above the rails enough to see what's outside their guided path. So to see someone else with a different view of things angers them. This causes them to lash out. Occasionally one or two of them manage to break away and they see what they've missed out on for years.

Just heard some more concerning news yesterday. One of the large farming families near our remote farm have just sold out.

It follows one of the vineyards I lease for grazing being sold to Chinese investors last year

Why is it concerning ? 

I am a third generation farmer and have been farming for 40 years. I have never seen so much pressure on global food resources. It is like watching a slow motion train wreck. Prices for basic food commodities are already soaring to unheard of heights.  Agricultural land prices are going crazy and overseas companies are stepping into Australia and buying anything that's not nailed down. 

It may not be visible to the shoppers in Coles or Woolies, but pressure on global food supplies is already growing incredibly fast as nations fight to feed their people.

If we don't embrace GM how are we going to feed everyone ? I,m not a huge fan of GM. but I cant see any other genuine, realistic, workable answer.

Even if we do embrace GM. it will only buy us a bit more time. We have to stop the ever increasing population growth. Its the only sustainable, achievable long term answer.

Should we start more wars and develop more infectious diseases?

Do you think maybe, when people can't afford to buy food and starve to death, that will solve the problem?

Hi chameleon54, what you have posted here in relation to the large farming family closing shop is not because they did or didn't grow GM crops. It is because of the way things are heading.  The poor subsidisation by the governments, the influence mega corporations have over our politicians and people noot being concerned about the farmer's plight.

It''s more of a myth that things would be better if they were growing GMO. Yeah for some farmers in the short term the financial incentive which is really a bribe to get  $$$$s to quash any moral conflicts may help them along. But long term there will be probllems they  and others wouldn't want to have.

It's already a valid concern in the US with people suffering medical problems in relation to eating GM food. More GM means more medical problems which is good news for BIG PHARMA.

Last year health ministers voted for a comprehensive system of labelling of GM foods. The Australian Prime Minister John Howard subsequently intervened in the process, proposing a watering down of the model that was put forward. So far the states appear polarised over the issue, with Tasmania and Victoria pushing for a very tough labelling regime, while Western Australia and the Northern Territory support the weaker federal model.

8th January Brexit: Scotland may be 'forced' to sell GM food if England changes law

SCOTLAND may soon be “forced to accept the marketing, sale and free circulation” of genetically modified food as England looks to change its own laws in the area post-Brexit, the Scottish Government has warned.

The UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has today launched a public consultation on the use of gene editing on both livestock and arable crops.

Yeah they say that gene editing is different from modification. But I'd just like my food natural thankyou very much. One door opens and then many more will follow.  This is bad news for anyone who really cares.

Update - Since the first post on a Canadian pension fund buying up a large local family farm, they have purchased two more holdings in the small district. All up seven farming families who been very active community workers, sent their kids to the small local school etc. are leaving the district.  The school is now under threat of closure.  No doubt there will be more farms sold to the company soon............

As for reducing population growth so that we dont need to rely on GM crops, I have addressed the question before.  We dont need to be  " killing off " anyone.

Past experience has shown that lifting education standards in poor countries results in lowering population growth over time. The provision of reliable, affordable contraception in poor countries also has been shown to lower birth rates over time.

In wealthy countries such as Australia a very simple step to lower birth rates is for the government to accept that the ponzi scheme of continual population growth to fund economic growth is not sustainable and has to change.

Once this is recognised, population growth can simply be slowed ( or stopped completely ) by changing policy settings on subsidising people to have children.

* Scrap the baby bonus

* Scrap or lower very generous subsidies on child care

* Scrap or lower family tax benefits

* Scrap or lower extra benefits paid to social security recipients for each extra child they have

Governments could keep the payments for the first child born if they feel that is a social responsibility, and after that, if you want more, you are on your own to pay for the extra kids.

If people had to actually fund their personal decision to have large families themselves, you would find the birth rate would drop dramatically.

The idea of being forced to eat GM food is obscene. Well, some folks think that population reduction is the only answer. I don't agree with that though. I do agree though that we may have too many people now.

I have heard that Bill Gates believes in population reduction. Personally I don't regard him as a man with integrity.
