Go away Australian Border Force

One of the many reasons that I love Melbourne. HeartYour Blue Shirts are not welcome here, Mr Abbott.

Re: Go away Australian Border Force

Read the law wording in my link, same website. You need to, if requested, prove your age.

That means carry a valid ID, by default. As we don't have date stamps yet ๐Ÿ™‚

That is my point. Proof of being an Australian and by default the "visa check" is passed. Being redundant.

And if like me you have  permanent residency you don't need a visa either - whatever nationality your passport is.

Re: Go away Australian Border Force

How would you prove you don't need a visa? Hypothetically now, of course, as it isn't happening (the random checks).

Re: Go away Australian Border Force

The Hawk, I was talking about clubs and alcohol situations. From my first post. In terms of requirement. For the activities I do. Not crime.

The police can ask for it. I have known them to do so.

If I thought that I would in addition be required to pass a visa check on the spot, then I would carry a passport.

As I've never been stopped in the street and asked to produce such proof, I've never given it much thought; but since I'm white and speak with an Australian accent I doubt whther it will ever be demanded of me anyway.

Re: Go away Australian Border Force

The press release was of a stop anyone nature. To not be accused of racial motivation they'd have to have a bit of diversity. What a ridiculous thing to make public. Upset and misunderstandings aren't good for the police or politicians!

How ageist of the authorities!

Thing is, it's 20-30 something backpackers who overstay. Regardless of ethnic origin.

Oops I did mention transport officials too. In both NSW and Vic they can also ask for ID not just name and address.

that does not say you have to carry ID only that you have to prove your age if buying alcohol.

and you only have to provide name and address to police if they believe you have committed a crime,  not actual ID

That one doesn't hold water.

How about, no ID - then detained for 6 hours (legal maximum)

because they 'don't believe you'

It happened - they can be pig-headed.   Pun intended
