Watching a doco on this fabulous station that runs at 98% on time.
We could learn something from this station and the way it's operated. Reliable trains here is at an all time low!

I don't understand why people in this country complain about trains as if we have the worst service in the world. The service is damned good.
I do at least 2 trips every day around Sydney and sometimes do up to 6 in a day and they are rarely late. And if they are late it is almost always to do with a medical emergency along the line somewhere.
In the last 10 years I can recall one serious issue with lateness due to some major signal failure.
That's not bad fo a system that still runs on a fairly manual mode so prone to errors.

I guess my two daughters have nothing to complain about. They each travel on different lines 5 days per week. Rarely a day goes by where trains are not cancelled or running late, both morning and afternoon. There are times when there are no trains at all.....great when you have to get to work and hour away.
Makes having children in after school care / daycare difficult when trains are not reliable to get you back in time to collect your precious children. Late fees are $1 per minute each child....eg: 20 minutes late = $40 out of pocket!
One daughter rang me....no trains mum (panic) I drove an hour home to collect her son from daycare. Luckily I was able to do that.
No trains again mum....buses replacing them, so 2 hours late home.
Driving takes half the time but petrol and parking fees rule that out and we are constantly asked to help the environment and travel by public transport ๐
The trains are dirty, over crowded without opening windows. Great when the train fails due to power down and an over crowded carriage has people passing out due to heat and lack of air.

Where is Grand Central station? New York? (Grand Central Terminal).
Over what distance do those trains run? Wouldn't be as far as City Rail (Sydney/NSW) Train journeys. They run to where I live about 2-2.5 hour journey and goes further than that...more hazards on the way than in New York.
Did they mention Jackie Kennedy Onassis was instrumental in stopping the station from getting knocked down in the mid 1970's.
It is a beautiful station, was there beg. of last year.

Hi Am*3...Yes it's in New York City. They don't build things like that anymore! They just finished an $8 billion project digging new tunnels into the east side of Queens (the western end of Long Island). Those tunnels really are an amazing feat of engineering. Grand central connects to trains heading everywhere in the US.
When I look at those tunnels I imagine archaeologists of the future speculating how they were built, like we do when talking about the pyramids.....after the collapse of our society of course.
There used to be people who lived in the tunnels...they've cleared them out years ago though.

I agree with INAM, and am happy with Vic Rail and Melbourne's rail network.
PCT: "Singapore is another place we could learn a lot from as well."
Such as the political system which has been totally dominated by the de-facto one party state (PAP) since 1959!
TS: ".....There are times when there are no trains at all....."
So TS, what area (train service) are you refering to, as I do not believe that statement, and I would like to check the records.
