just heard a breaking news story on ABC radio saying the NSW govt will ban greyhound racing as of mid next year.
as an owner of an ex racer but not in nsw i will watch with great interest this story as it unfolds.

why would i think i should get a vote?
why would the federal government feel i as non gay person need a vote on gay mariage? i'm not religeos, not gay, not married or ever likely to be. oh i know, because i'm an australian citizen and as such i do get a say on many things that go on in australia. i think its part of what makes our country better than countries where the people have no say in what happens in their country.
now, pidgeon racing,
thanks for alerting me to that. id have no problem supporting a ban on pidgeon racing if its found to be killing thousands of birds because they too are no good at racing. might cut the number of feral pidgeons that infest the wheat terminal and local township here.
i think ive made it clear that i will not be in favour of any killing of any animal that are proven to be unsuitable to human entertainment use.

As you have been at great pains to point out, you are not involved in the industry in any way so surely you have no right to any input into whether the industry should be closed down. It doesn't affect you or your livelihood and quite frankly anyone who is so adamant that it should be closed without the ability to see the other side of the story is probabluy the very worst person to be involved in the decision.
Oh my goodness Lyndal, this is gold.
As if you could possibly, even for a moment, mean what you have posted.
Very pleased to see the ban, and hope it leads to signficantly increased scrutiny and wide public discussion in other states about this industry, with all interested citizens in our democracy contributing to these debates.

Let's just ban everything we do not like. I really hate the mini motocycles that kids ride around here at high speed with no regard for traffic or pedestrians, they zoom on bike path trough our "of the leash park", and one of them killed the woman last year. And the surf skis; they are noisy and they ride close to where people swim, people were also injured/killed. I used to like to sit on the beach in summer in peace and quite; lately we get these hoons that spoil it all. And how about the Grand Prix? My daughter lives near the Albert Park and my granddaughter goes to StKilda primary school, situated on the edge of the park. During the Grand Prix I am unable to drive into their area and the school closes for a day, and parents have to take day off unless they have somebody who can mind the kids.
Funny, people scream "nanny state" when government is trying to regulate something, but when they try to ban something that most people do not know much about, that is just fine.

you keep saying racing them is cruel. There are cruel aspects in the racing, which can be dealt with, but the actual race is not cruel.

in facy here its only me saying greyhounds getting injured isnt an accident, its a very forseeable outcome of 8 dogs racing as fast as they can in close formation.
No there is no difference; in both instances the dog is doing something that he loves.

I am not sure why you think that there are 8 dogs racing, I only ever seen 6 starting boxes; maybe somewhere o/s they have more.

have i said racing greyhounds is cruel, i hope i did as it is. if you are unable to see a difference between 8 - 10 dogs racing flat our around a track all trying to catch the same 'lure' and several dogs frolicking around a paddock or on a beach well theres no hope for you is there?
where do i get the 8 dogs racing from, well from the greyhound racings own website for 'box draws'

This ban has nothing to do with "like" or "dislike"
An inquiry into the NSW industry found that there was "overwhelming evidence of systemic animal cruelty, including mass greyhound killings and live baiting".

i would imagine riding an unregistered motor cycle in a public place where you live is against the law as it is here in south australia. so if you have anyone riding them in your park call the police.
surf skis are banned in many places on the murray river plus they are not permitted within 200mts of shore along the coast in south australia.
when the grand prix was held in south australia a lot of residents around the track complained about noise and the restrictions as they do now when the V8 supercar race is held. i'm sure some of them would gladly ban it or have it moved.
there are many things banned in this country we once did freely. we once owned automatic guns. we once used rabbit traps. we once drove our cars without seatbelts. we even used our mobile phones whilst driving for a while there.
do you want these bans lifted too?
only the nothern territory has a yearly fireworks day, all the other states banned them because we couldnt be trusted not to blow our heads off. do you want that ban lifted?
i could go on but you see my point dont you.

The "that's life!" magazine this week has two stories in it about Greyhounds. One from an owner / trainer and one from a Greyhound Rescuer.
Very interesting reading, and I assume there will be more in future.
I am neither an owner, nor anyway involved in the racing industry, but following this thread, I can see both sides of the story.
There is good and bad everywhere, not just in sports, and there will always be people that look one-eyed at things.
Let's not argue here over things we have no control over. I will watch the authorities and hope they come to a solution that's beneficial to both dogs and owners. The first thing they should concentrate on is the Breeders of Greyhounds. JMHO.
BTW, many years ago I owned a little dog. A X between a miniature Foxy and a miniature Whipped. We had a big yard for him to run around, but he still prefered his runs around the Football oval. Every day when he heard my sons coming home from School, he would run around the yard in circles so fast, I bet if we had taken him to a race track, he would have outrun any Greyhound.
Some dogs just love running, some love to curl up and watch TV.
