I don't know what posessed my to buy half a leg of ham this year, when wer'e only a 2 person household, and OH away on his fishing trip.
While he was away I lived on ham, snacked on it, had it in bread rolls, froze some of it.
Now finally, last night I cooked up the bone and will make some pea & ham soup for dinner and some to freeze.
I don't think I'll even be able to handle even the smell of it for a while!

It's easy Gilly. I just boil up the bone until the meat falls off it. Then I refrigerate the stock so I can skim the fat off it.
Rinse the split peas in a colander til the water runs clear. You buy the split peas in the soup section in a packet.
Just add the peas to the stock then let it come to the boil, add a cpl of chopped carrots and spuds, cpl sticks of celery, simmer til the peas have boiled down to a thick consistency.
Cool and eat.
It freezes well.

It plays the sombre music for the death of the pig and to honour it's contribution to The Christmas Spirit and the enjoyment of pea & ham soup

Yum enjoying it now.
forgot to say stir regularly as the peas tend to stick to the bottom of the pot at first.
Add the shredded ham off the bone and any leftover ham from Christmas at the end of cooking and let heat through. No need to season, the ham will be salty enough.
