If it is halal certified I am happy for the companies to close down, they wont be getting any $$$ from me.

other countries have to abide by Australian standards to export their goods to us, why do you feel Australian companies should be exempt from abiding by other countries requirements?

I understand your stance on halal label being required domestically but not this.
its extreme and mean spirited and destructive to Australian industry and would encroach on our freedoms.

The group calling for the boycott, Halal Choice, was begun by Kirralie Smith 10 months ago after she suspected 'extortion' by the certifying bodies.

Despite not being able to offer any proof to ABC Rural, Ms Smith says demanding certification is like extortion.

"Many halal products that are halal certified are paying fees for certification that are already halal, e.g. milk, honey or nuts, yet companies are paying thousands of dollars a year."

Ms Smith does not think even those companies seeking to find export markets for things like dairy products need certification.

"I think it reeks of extortion because Muslims worldwide know that they can consume milk .... so to ask a company to pay fees is unjust."

She denies she's discriminating on the basis of religion.

She thinks? Perhaps she needs to chat to the buyers?

maybe they don't pay anyone a certification fee and just promote their products as being halal because they are, although they do state the gelatin added is halal certified.

I'm pretty sure that article states that a company spokesperson said the iced coffee was produced in a halal certified factory.

Who knows. The whole argumetn is ludicrous anyway.

Australian food producers pay for a heap of accreditations, depending on their market or potential market.

I don't get the why the drama about halal compared to any other compliance or certification they pay for.

Mostly it makes no difference to me either. I do question why they are certifying uneccesary items though. Plastic for example, and despite the protests from others claiming no white milk is certified because it doesnt need to be, it looks like Parmalat are paying for certification on every product including white milk by having the entire factory certified if that article is correct.

It would surely be cheaper to only certify the required products like they do with Kosher and organic. It can cost over $30,000 a year to certify a kebab shop, I shudder to think what it would cost to certify an entire factory and Parmalat have several of them.

Most of the other accreditations Parmalat have are food and safety standards which I imagine would be a legal requirement.

Pauls have paid for certification of their factory. There is a fee for this, based on time, I believe, from what I have read.

It is not a matter of certifying each product but a matter of how the products are made and where and what ingredients are in them..

If other countries require islamic halal products from Australian companies, I will not spend ANY of my money to support the Australian company who is supplying halal certified product to other countries. If companies want to sell halal certified product to overseas that is fine, but I WILL boycott that company.
