Making a blank statement like Mr Abbott is now targetting welfare and pensioners is disingenous.

Australia has a huge welfare bill that needs to be addressed and it's not old pensioners that are being targetted, it's the ppl rorting the disability and single parent pensions that will need re-assessing. Like our charming Mr Siege Gunman Monis who had been living on welfare since his arrival in Australia. Case like that need target with the pointy end of a big stick IMO.

lets wait and see on that one.

that maniac gunman was he on welfare since he arrived here? I read that he had a number of businesses

He had a number of businesses while living on welfare, Deb. Sometimes you also have to read what you don't want read.

Are you happy financing terrorists via your tax?

:abbotts purchase of an extra 54 fighter jets are just a couple that spring to mind"

That was slated and planned for in the white paper. It's called long term planning, everyone knew a decision had to be made,

it's just Abbott happened to be PM at the time so you can't pin that on him.

The only quick almost unplanned major decision on military spending was Labors decision to buy 12 Super Hornets.

no need for ridiculous comments like that

I wasn't aware that he was running businesses whilst on welfare.  Why wasn't this picked up and dealt with earlier?

Probably because the bleeding hearts were bleating about refugee's rights and what a rich country like Australia should be doing to help them, how it would be racist and anti-muslim bigotry to investigate it.

And because no government has had the guts to put their head on the chopping block about it and now it's blown way out of proportion it's been left to Mr Abbott to do something about it and isn't he being demonised for it!?

Debra

You are arguing defence matters and you post this

"the white Paper?? it looks to me like abbott purchased a lot extra. so yes, I will pin that one on him and his govt."

If you don't know what a white paper is in terms of Defence planning in Australia, I am sorry but i suggest you

go and join Julia with her knitting.

Here, a very quick education for you. They are produced by BOTH Labor and Liberals either every year or every couple of years.

The Prime Minister and the Minister for Defence announced on 4 April 2014, that Defence would produce a new White Paper to be released in 2015.

Defence White Papers are the Government's most important guidance about Australia's long-term defence capability. They allow the Government and community to understand the opportunities and challenges for Australia's future defence and security needs.

The 2015 Defence White Paper will be a whole-of-government product that reflects the Government's overall strategic, fiscal and broader policy priorities.

The 2015 Defence White Paper is being developed in a deliberate and methodical manner as these decisions will guide Australia's defence capability for the coming decades. It will align defence policy with military strategy and deliver an affordable Australian Defence Force structure.

The White Paper will include a comprehensive review of Australia's strategic environment, including the changes underway in our region and across the globe and the implications of these changes for Australia. It will outline the tasks the Government expects of Defence and how these can be achieved with the resources available.

A fully-costed Force Structure Review will underpin the White Paper. The Force Structure Review will assess Defence's future capability needs and propose a force structure that addresses Australia's defence objectives within an agreed allocation of funding."

Hence why I said the only unscripted purchase was of the Super Hornets, even though it had been hinted at.

Australia originally planned to buy 100 F-35's, only 72 have been ordered.
