In the Supermarked. I was doing some fruit and veg shopping and noticed him struggling to open the produce bag. I've struggled with them before so I wondered if I should help him or would he feel I was being patronised.
As I walked past him I jokingly said, "you have to spit on it"! I always wet my thumb and index finger to open the bags.
We laughed and he went pretendy "ptui ptui" on the bag.
I went around and got some tomatoes and deliberated whether I should get the lemons from USA or limes from Aus.
When I looked up he was still patiently struggling with the bag.
I felt bad then about the flippant spit comment and said "can I help you"? He gave me the bag and I showed him how I lick my thumb and finger and the bag opened straight away! (It's not always that easy).
Anyway we had shared another laugh about it and went about our shopping.
I had to get the fruit and veg guy to help me with mine once.

and tell Icy to plant a grafted Lemon and Lime tree.

thanks, Erica, but I live in a tiny flat in the city with just a few pot plants on the balcony.
My daughter in Mackay has a lemonade tree, it's only small, about waist-high, but bears a huge amount of fruit. They mostly let it rot on the ground. On year when I go to visit I should help her make some marmalade with them.
There's a lovely passionfruit vine that grows over the septic tank too lol.
Omg I'm in trouble now. First the spit thing, now the septic tank.
Um Ah.

It was her thread after all
Yes, as icy said, that is correct. It does make me wonder if others read whole thread before jumping in and accusing others of things they never even did.
Australian limes $12.95 kg here. No elderly persons needing assistance in my supermarket this afternoon.

Icy, you can buy the grafted Citrus tree in miniature size to be grown in a pot on your balcony. If you considder the money you pay for citrus fruit in one year, and the price of a small tree that will produce fruit for most of the year, you'll be way ahead financially.
Besides, Lemons and limes do not have to be picked when ripe, they store better when left on the tree until you need them.
OK, that is my good deed for today.

That was kind of you to help and I'm sure he felt grateful, but licking your fingers in a supermarket? Yuk...those trolleys and shelves are germy. I actually had a discussion in my supermarket last week about this....me and another woman were struggling with the bags and she commented how she doesn't like to lick her fingers to open them.
I usually go to the veggie that sit on ice and open several bags,...or try not to use the bags at all.
that is why you spit, not lick and use the other hand to pick the fruit or veggies....

Yep, completely taken over & off topic.
Lemons and limes were mentioned in the OP, not really off topic then.
I interrupted some arguing asking about them.
My good deed in a supermarket yesterday....I waited patiently behind 2 elderly men shuffling along gabbing instead barreling past them like a linebacker.

Icy, I enjoyed your post but the concerted attack on your motives was disturbing to say the least.
All this nit picking about "spitting" is just that, a wedge to make you feel bad about doing someone a favour. I'm sure you didn't "spit" on anything & the endless harping about it?? just ignore them, no need to defend yourself against this type of pettiness.
It's Christmas everybody,at least try to have some charitable thoughts, to help others in need.
Icy, plant a fig tree, that's what I'm going to do

Had a quiet giggle yesterday..................... mother with tbaby in a trolley, baby seat part covered in a fancy shmancy seat cover, complete with 2 pillows and the handle covered.........baby sitting in the other part of the trolley with the shopping........... chewing on the trolley!

If that was my elderly father, I would be grateful for your help icy.
My naughty elderly neighbour came to my place last night with a beautfiul Christmas gift as a thanks for the help we have both given her throughout the year, I waved my finger at her for being naughty.
It warms my heart to hear or see people who care and help our elderly.

You know, not everyone tells what they do privately, for others. I suspect most people do good deeds as a part of everyday life. (I hope they do, anyway)
It's a human quality isn't it?
The motive can be anything, self satisfaction, genuine goodwill, a place in Heaven.......................
