3 Asylum Seekers in detention escaped yesterday.
So far police have been unable to find them.
Anyone know anything about this?
Any links etc?

This may come as a surprise, but there are people out there who will and do help refugees whether or not we insist on making inhumane laws that declare these people "illegal" which then gives some the idea than they then become dangerous, unwanted somehow less than human.
This country has a tiny population. True some parts of our major cities might seem over populated, thats simply the outcome of bad design and bad decisions, ie: no planning for growth, bad road design etc. Imagine Sydney with a great, free public transport system, super fast trains maybe.
There could be plenty here for all of us and many many more. Step outside any major city and our country towns are dying, everyone is leaving. I think we need more people, not less. The more people there are, the more things are needed, thats not a bad thing, its simple economics.
Recently the German govt admitted that their closed door policy hadn't really worked out well, that it had in fact been a mistake, their population was ageing and they weren't going to have the younger generations to replenish the workforce.
And no I don't have a link to prove this but am sure you will be able to find the German Govt bit out yourself.

<== You're preaching to it.
and my original comment has been purposely taken out of context.
But also look from this perspective.
Not everybody helps out. IF those who are willing to, do so illegally and are caught and stopped, then what?
Imagine how many more people they could have gone onto help if they had done things the "right way".

I suspect Karen is talking about the 50,000+ REAL illegals estimated to be in the country who arrived anywhichway except by boat.

Are you talking about the 50,000 + visa overstayers, in which case MAJORITY of those simply extend their visas but are still included in the 50,000 number?

I suspect it is easier to sit back and talk about how we'd do everything the right way but the fact is we are not living the life of an asylum seeker and really don't know what we'd do if we were "in their shoes".

Perhaps, but I do know what thousands of them do, do. (yes I know that sounds funny). They wait in their refugee camps. They wait until someone resettles them and finds them a more permanent solution.
But the purpose of asylum is to be safe. The purpose of asylum is not to seek a better lifestyle.

You also need to remember that we are talking about 4.5million temporary visas, out of those a very small percentage overstay them, and as I said, MAJORITY simply extend them.
