I said "This is my country , my culture and it is a Matriarchal Culture which means we treat women with respect"
on 26-04-2013 04:47 PM

Is our society Matriarchal? no, but our society does respect the role of Mothers & women.
No it's not racist but there are many who like to beat the racist drum so they themselves are heard to the detriment of others.

Depends on the context and tone.
What was the general conversation about?

............................
I think people mix up "culture" and "race"
Two very different subjects and people will often call you racist if you attack someones culture which is an entirely silly thing to do.
^^^ Absolutely! And its really irritates me when they do!
There is absolutely nothing racist in the sentence you have written in the opening post, Grandmoon. Its a strong sentence of personal beliefs, but not racist at all... and possibly not agreed upon by others either 😉

In our "Australian" culture there are families that are Matriarchal.
In my family it is Mum that is the head.. she is the one we all go to and the one that we respect and listen to the most..
We are a very diverse culture and have lots of different twists to what we would consider norm...
On a whole we do not disrespect women, we have a female PM and GG, we have had women as premiers of most states...

I'm the matriarch of our family.

I'm the matriarch of our family.
My husband is the head of my family....
.............. and I'm matriarchal enough to let him continue to believe that! 😉 :^O

Reminds me of the movie My big fat Greek wedding. "the male is the head of the household and the wife is the neck. We move them anywhere we want them to? Or something similar.
I'm going to put a spin on this thread. Most of us tend to believe muslims women are treated as subordinates to men. But these women have been so brainwashed they believe they're equal or have more rights than men as given by Allah. I have been trying to understand the logic behind their belief. I have come to the conclusion that it's something like anorexic thinking they're fat. No amount of logic can convince them they're not.
GOing back to your OP, cultural and societal value determines what you mean by respect. In the 50s it was respectful to ensure your wife stays at home and you support her. Nowadays it's more respectful to let her do what she wants. It's all relative. You need to define "my country", "cuture" Matriachial, and all women or just some" before we can have a serious conversation.
