I said "This is my country , my culture and it is a Matriarchal Culture which means we treat women with respect"
on 27-04-2013 08:59 PM
.Again I ask - what is the context? What was the rest of the conversation about??
Depending on who the other person was and the context, you saying to someone ""This is my country , my culture and it is a Matriarchal Culture which means we treat women with respect" implies "Your culture is a Patriarchal culture and as such you don't treat women with respect."
In this case, then you are definitely making a racist statement.

Do you believe in the existence of patriarchal culture/s?
If so, how does that belief translate to racism? (that culture being racially inferior)

Just because a culture is patriarchal doesn't mean that they don't treat women with respect. Which is what the OP's words implied.
It translates to racism thus: Your culture is patriarchal therefore you are unable to treat women with respect.
That is a racist statement.
(and whilst I appreciate that race and culture are different, the elements are tied and most people do connect them)

I would have to agree with you there, Martini. Male dominance does not necessarily mean inability to treat women with respect. Take some churches/religions for example 😄

I don't want to hijack this thread Eve, but do you genuinely believe women have the same rights as men in churches and religions throughout history??? The bible and the Koran are written by men in the stones ages. I rest my case.

For those who are interested the conversation started when this male entered a room where there were 2 women and a man have a serious conversation. As he entered he started to speak in his own language which the other man also speaks. I said "That was very rude as we are speaking"
After we finished our conversation he asked me what I had against him. When I started to answer him he started to yell at me that I was a liar, all the other women were liars and I was a piece of S**t.
I then said "This is my Country, my culture which is a martrarchal culture which means we treat women with respect"

I can understand why you said what you did but I would have just told him he was a rude b.......d and left it at that.
His ethnicity really has nothing to do with his rudeness. It would have been just as rude if he spoken to the other man in English whilst he was in conversation with someone else.

Now that I know the context of the conversation, yes your comment would be considered racist.
