We did while we were on holidays overseas. They nearly wouldn't rent us a car because we didn't have one.

I would compare that to electricity, sure we can "live" without it, but why? Question, could you do without any phone of any kind?, moble or home? Or internet?
Theres a movie you should watch, you can probibly find it on youtube. Called, "after armigeddon" where a family loses all modern conviences due to an outbreak of desease and takes to the road in a world with no rules and everyone out for themselves.

I have one however it's very rarely used. Most of the time it just gets recharged as it is for emergencies only and my immediate family are the only ones who have the number 😄

I think for practical reasons it's a good idea to have some type of phone, whether it's home or mobile. Tbh I'm a bit of a minimalist, so I like trying to simplify my life and do without things I can do without! A few months ago I realised I didn't need a mobile phone anymore and I'm loving it; I'm not against mobiles, I don't mind if anyone else has one, it just struck me that I could do without. I will probably get a phone again sometime, just not in the foreseeable future.
As for luxuries such as electricity and Internet, that is most certainly what they are - luxuries, not necessities. I'm working on giving up my iPad and I try not to use the home computer too much. Eventually, when I move out of home I'd like to not have a computer at all. What works for some doesn't work for others, though. It all depends on your lifestyle.

I gave up on mine when I prepaid for a year and 300 minutes........after 12 months, I still had 278 minutes remaining. That was in 2009. I recently obtained another, one that I can call out on and receive calls, nothing else......it won't take pictures, there are no apps, and no texting. I got it because the war department felt more secure when we went on vacation.

a smart phone to use it only as a telephone.

I do own one but it's the most basic one you could ever have. Doesn't use the internet at all, is basically just a pre-paid telephone that can receive and make calls.
Only Mr. Tasfleur has the number, and it's only switched on if I'm going away from home so that he can keep in touch, or I'm travelling at night for a long period of time between towns.
Wouldn't make more than 10 calls in a year, if that ...
I haven't got an iPad, don't want one, but do have a laptop I carry all the time, as well as my big PC at home.
