Offensive place names. I this day and age I can't believe they are still named as such!

I saw the post below from the discussion that has now been locked. Wow! I didn't even know about this place. We're in the 21st century and there are still places named like this. What's wrong with Australia?????

So there are three places in Australia with this name. Again, this is 2020, something very wrong with our history and society. Very wrong. If they can bring Uluru back, then why not get rid of these disgusting names? They were named in a time when the people who had the power to name them as such because certain races were deemed to be inferior.

I haven't had a look at all of them to see if any of the names have been changed. I hope one has.

BTW: Kudos to Mr. Hagan for getting the offensive  name of that sports oval changed.

I don't know about that stand you refer to daviudc4430.. I do remember activist and former diplomat Stephen Hagan who waged an uphill battle against ignorance and selfishness in Australia and took the his case to the UN. He succeeded and the stand in question, the E. S. Ni**ER BROWN STAND in Tooowoomba, Queensland was finally taken down. Howard of course wouldn't do anything about it.

Mr. Hagan copped a lot of flack and had death threats. To me, he did a great thing!

I can't believe the carry on over names that have been around forever, and that people have nothing better to do than whinge and complain about every perceived insult. I really couldn't care less what anything is called, a name is just that just a "name" and cannot harm anyone. The whole issue smacks of paranoia and childishness, and people who should direct their efforts to some worthwhile cause instead.

Some names are not worth complaining about but the N word cuts like a scythe into people who feel hurt deeper than what others could ever envisage.  But as the_great_she_elephant said below makes great sense

In amongst all of this, the silly complaining about black coffee or black bean sauce ruins the geniune plight like getting rid of the N word in places.

the high school I did teach at for thirty years had students who would call aboriginal students the ‘N’ word often.

The students calling aboriginals the ‘N’ word were themselves aboriginal.  It was common among the aboriginal kids to use this name when referring to their aboriginal friends, despite teachers asking them to stop doing it.  Even the adult aboriginals in the school couldn’t get them to stop.
