Offensive place names. I this day and age I can't believe they are still named as such!
I saw the post below from the discussion that has now been locked. Wow! I didn't even know about this place. We're in the 21st century and there are still places named like this. What's wrong with Australia?????

I suppose they will want to change Mount Niggerhead's name next.
So I did a search on the Internet and this came up.
An Aboriginal group plans to sue the Victorian Government for ignoring its heritage in the renaming of Mt Niggerhead, a mountain in the Alpine National Park.
November 17, 2008 — 11.02amFor decades, the 1846-metre Mount Niggerhead in the state's north-east has been at the centre of a heated debate about its name.

Niggerhead Rock 'pretty damn offensive'

So there are three places in Australia with this name. Again, this is 2020, something very wrong with our history and society. Very wrong. If they can bring Uluru back, then why not get rid of these disgusting names? They were named in a time when the people who had the power to name them as such because certain races were deemed to be inferior.
I haven't had a look at all of them to see if any of the names have been changed. I hope one has.
BTW: Kudos to Mr. Hagan for getting the offensive name of that sports oval changed.

I remember the uphill battle Mr. Hagan had to go through to get the name removed from the oval. I bet back in the day if someone as prestigious as Harry Belafonte or Sidney Poitier were invited to watch a game at the oval the name would have been changed immediately.

Howard 'risking racist label'
July 11, 2003 — 10.00am
Prime Minister John Howard should abide by a United Nations ruling about a racist sign or risk being labelled a racist himself, an Aboriginal activist says.
Mr Howard had failed to act to order the removal of the name .....

I find it quite sad that Australia still has some catching up to do. What are your thoughts?

Waiting to see if and when a name change is imminent

Well, I don't see anything offensive in that name. It's an indigenous name as well. People with the Irish surname Coony have nothing to worry about either. And that's an Indigenous to Irish name as well. . The place names here on this thread where they are called the N word have come from people who were part of an "Era of Ignorance" and that was an era where certain people beccaue of their colour or ethnicity were deemed to inferior. The N word is offensive to many (Hollywood will trick people into thinking otherwise) and in a multi-cultural country like Australia, having places called that particular name is so wrong. Even in a country that was polulated by say just ony Caucasian people, naming places like that would be very wrong.
