Offensive place names. I this day and age I can't believe they are still named as such!

I saw the post below from the discussion that has now been locked. Wow! I didn't even know about this place. We're in the 21st century and there are still places named like this. What's wrong with Australia?????

I suppose they will want to change Mount Niggerhead's name next.

So I did a search on  the Internet and this came up.

An Aboriginal group plans to sue the Victorian Government for ignoring its heritage in the renaming of Mt Niggerhead, a mountain in the Alpine National Park.

November 17, 2008 — 11.02am

For decades, the 1846-metre Mount Niggerhead in the state's north-east has been at the centre of a heated debate about its name.

Why Niggerhead Rock and Suicide Bay need Tasmanian Aboriginal names

Niggerhead Rock 'pretty damn offensive'

So there are three places in Australia with this name. Again, this is 2020, something very wrong with our history and society. Very wrong. If they can bring Uluru back, then why not get rid of these disgusting names? They were named in a time when the people who had the power to name them as such because certain races were deemed to be inferior.

I haven't had a look at all of them to see if any of the names have been changed. I hope one has.

BTW: Kudos to Mr. Hagan for getting the offensive  name of that sports oval changed.

Offensive place names. In this day and age I can't believe they are still named as such!

And a Black Widow spider is not named after a black widow.

The spider is black.

Some people just look for stuff to comment on.

the renaming of places and locations that under todays political correctness are no longer deemed ok is a job that will take forever

the list is long and getting longer every day as another group decides something upsets them

not saying there arnt plenty of bad names out there but sadly they are part of history

you can't just wipe out history because you dont like it

much better to educate why places were named

i remember a few years ago some wanted and got the name of a football grand satand renamed because it was called 'blackies' stand or something like that

it was named after a local footballer whos name was 'blackie'

I don't know about that stand you refer to daviudc4430.. I do remember activist and former diplomat Stephen Hagan who waged an uphill battle against ignorance and selfishness in Australia and took the his case to the UN. He succeeded and the stand in question, the E. S. Ni**ER BROWN STAND in Tooowoomba, Queensland was finally taken down. Howard of course wouldn't do anything about it.

Mr. Hagan copped a lot of flack and had death threats. To me, he did a great thing!

 The Sydney Morning Herald

  Remove 'ni**er' , says UN

April 23, 2003

A UN committee has called for the word ni**er to be removed from the E S Ni**er Brown stand at Toowoomba.

In an 11-page judgment, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination said the term was offensive and insulting and recommended the federal government remove the word ni**er from the sign at the sports ground, west of Brisbane.

How the sign was ever allowed to be put up in the first place beats me.

But I meant they were not named after a specific  'black widow' meaning a person.

I can't believe the carry on over names that have been around forever, and that people have nothing better to do than whinge and complain about every perceived insult. I really couldn't care less what anything is called, a name is just that just a "name" and cannot harm anyone. The whole issue smacks of paranoia and childishness, and people who should direct their efforts to some worthwhile cause instead.

What I find hard to grasp is the 'I'm all right, Jack' attitude of some people - the idea that because something doesn't offend them, nobody else has a right to be offended by it either.

Being offended is NOT a right. it's a personal choice

Some names are not worth complaining about but the N word cuts like a scythe into people who feel hurt deeper than what others could ever envisage.  But as the_great_she_elephant said below makes great sense

In amongst all of this, the silly complaining about black coffee or black bean sauce ruins the geniune plight like getting rid of the N word in places.

the high school I did teach at for thirty years had students who would call aboriginal students the ‘N’ word often.

The students calling aboriginals the ‘N’ word were themselves aboriginal.  It was common among the aboriginal kids to use this name when referring to their aboriginal friends, despite teachers asking them to stop doing it.  Even the adult aboriginals in the school couldn’t get them to stop.
