Of course they were trying to hide it.  They even managed to drum up the threat of an ISIS terrorist attack.

An historic inquiry has warned that the bi-partisan backed policy of detaining all asylum seekers who arrive by boat is to blame for appalling rates of self-harm, family breakdowns, and mental health deterioration among asylum seeker children held in immigration detention centres.

The Australian Human Rights Commission’s ‘Forgotten Children Report’ was tabled just before 7pm on Wednesday night after the government spent the day continually pushing the deadline back, forcing the Commission to reschedule its media launch and leading Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young to accuse the government of trying to bury the report.

Given the report’s content, and extensive list of recommendations, it would hardly be surprising if the Coalition were hoping for that result.

Human Rights Commission should thank Scott Morrison

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has says the Australian Human Rights Commission should be "ashamed of itself" over its children in detention inquiry, which he says is a blatant attack on his government.

The commission report - tabled by the government on Wednesday - called for a royal commission after finding there were 233 recorded assaults involving children and 33 incidents of reported sexual assault. It also reported there were 207 incidences of "actual self harm" and 436 incidences of 436 threatened self harm.

In an interview on 3AW radio, Mr Abbott slammed the commission, questioning the timing of the report.

Hide it for Labors sake you mean. The report does not shed a good light on the numbers when Labor were in power.

Just look at the numbers of Children in detention in 2013 comapred to the end of last year ?

That is a huge drop and confirms what the Gov't has been saying, that the numbers have decreased

substantially - 2000 to 213 because they are releasing them.

I do wonder how come the Commission decided to investiage at the start of Abbotts term as opposed

to when the numbers were highest.

I heard his speech after first hearing the Triggs speech. 

It was rather a shock to hear him contradict her entire speech.

Has he not read the report?

Did he not listen to Triggs?

Alternatives to indefinite detention, such as community detention, have not been properly considered by government decision makers, and the safety and wellbeing of children has not been a primary consideration," she said.

Professor Triggs said the inquiry did not start in 2013 when the number of children in detention peaked because they were only being held for short periods.

She said when the Coalition came to power it became apparent children were being held for longer periods.

Professor Triggs denied that the report was intended to damage the Abbott government.

"The commission is doing its job," she said. "This is not a politicised exercise. It is a fair report."

Who has a lack of empathy.  Abbott has had that report for three months and has done nothing but hide it and now he says that the Australian Human Rights commission should be ashamed of itself?

Well, it should be.

6 years of huge numbers of children in detention under Labor, no report, just because it gets a little longer in time

they go all out.

Yet BARELY ACKNOWLEDGE that the numbers have decreased substantially by release into the community.

Even if it was 0 in detention they would still whinge like a stuck pig !
